ATTIVITA' di RICERCA E PRINCIPALI RISULTATI
- Fondamenti della Meccanca Quanistica:
generalizzazione della diseguaglianza di Bell ad osservabili a
molti valori, confronto con teorie a variabili nascoste, proposta
di esperimento utilizzando la predissociazione molecolare.
- Teoria Statistica dei Campi:
rinormalizzazione non perturbativa della teoria phi4,
calcolo dell' energia libera di modelli di spin con metodi di
gruppo di rinormalizzazione, formulazione rigorosa del metodo di
campo medio per cammini aleatori e teorie di gauge sul reticolo,
applicazione di metodi di rinormalizzazione alla "reggeon field theory".
- Meccanica Statistica:
equazioni di consistenza per modelli di spin sul reticolo,
soluzione esatta del modello Z(N) a range infinito,
termodinamica della catena di Toda, determinazione rigorosa della
proprieta' critiche di modelli di crescita con molti stati assorbenti,
proprieta' ergodiche di oservabili microcanoniche e confronto con
le medie canoniche, studio delle proprieta' critiche e delle
transizioni del primo ordine in processi di "wetting", scoperta della
presenza di conducibilta' termica anomala in sistemi di bassa
dimensione spaziale, studio della dipendenza della conducibilita' termica
dalla taglia del sistema.
- Sistemi Dinamici:
identificazione della soglia di equipartizione in catene di oscillatori
nonlineari (modello FPU), studio dell' esistenza del limite termodinamico
per la distribuzione di esponenti di Lyapunov, proprieta' di localizzazione
nei vettori di Lyapunov, determinazione delle proprieta' di "scaling" del
massimo esponente di Lyapunov per mappe accoppiate nel limite di
debole accoppiamento, espressione analitica e comportamento di scala del
massimo esponente di Lyapunov per il problema FPU e identificazione della
soglia di stocasticita' forte, relazione tra proprieta' dinamiche
e statistiche in sistemi Hamiltoniani a molti gradi di liberta',
rilassamento all' equilibrio in solidi di gas rari con difetti,
studio rigoroso dell' esistenza di stati "breather" in catene
biatomiche, studio della formazione di breather in catene nonlineari,
breathers nella DNLSE, diffusione anomala da modelli deterministici,
applicazione del formalismo di grande deviazione alla turbolenza.
- Sistemi Complessi :
studio rigoroso di regimi dinamici complessi in mappe accoppiate,
transizione di fase "fuzzy" in modelli 1d, caratterizzazione del diagramma
di fase di modelli 2d e studio della dinamica d' interfacce complesse,
sincronizzazione guidata da rumore in modelli di mappe accoppiate
e studio delle classi di universalita' connese alle transizioni
di sincronizzazione, identificazione del meccanismo dinamico responsabile
del cosiddetto "caos stabile".
- Sistemi Quantistici:
proprieta' settrali dell' operatore di Schrodinger in potenziale
ultrametrico, dimostrazione dell' esistenza di spettro singolare
continuo per la versione "tight-binding" del potenziale ultrametrico,
trattamento col gruppo di rinormalizzazione del problema spettrale,
statistica poissoniana dei livelli nel modello di Toda a tre particelle,
densita' degli stati in modelli hamiltoniani quasi-integrabili,
meccanismo di rottura della simmetria e approssimazione di Bethe
per modelli di elettroni itineranti.
- Modelli d' interesse biologico:
analisi diserie temporali del segnale R-R da elettrocardiogrammi;
identificazione di diverse fasi dinamiche in modelli di propagazione
di epidemie; studi di meccanismi di regolazione genica in popolazioni
di cellule e identificazione di evoluzione complessa in reti geniche,
approccio dinamico allo studio del ripiegamento di proteine sia
in solvente implicito, che esplicito, studi di dinamica neurale,
transizione di denaturazione nel DNA.
- Storia della Fisica:
ricerche su temi di stora della fisica e articoli di divulgazione
scientifica.
COLLABORAZIONI INTERNAZIONALI
Ha visitato molti centri ed istituzioni di ricerca in varie
parti del mondo. Riguardo alle visite per brevi periodi la lista
sarebbe troppo lunga. Per quanto attiene le visite di lungo periodo
(dell' ordine di alcuni mesi ) si puo' citare che la prima e' stata
nel 1982 (per un anno) come NATO-fellow presso il Department
of Theoretical Physics of the University of Edinburgh (Scotland).
Successivamente, lunghi periodi di ricerca sono stati trascorsi
presso la Universidad Nacional Autonoma in Mexico City, l' Institute
des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques in Paris, il Departement de Physique
Theorique de l' Universite' de Geneve (Swiss), il Departement de Physique
Theorique de l' Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (Swiss), il
Centre de Physique Theorique du CNRS in Luminy (Marseille, France), il
Max-Planck-Institut fur Complexer Systeme in Dresden (Germany), il
Weizmann Institute of Sciences in Rehovot (Israel) e il Department of
Physics of the University of Potsdam (Germany).

- Foundations of Quantum Mechanics: generalization and
extension of Bell's inequality to multivalued observables and
comparison with hidden variable theory.
- Statistical Field Theory:
non-perturbative renormalization of the $phi^4$-theory, free
energy calculations by renormalization group method for spin systems,
rigorous formulation of the mean-field method for random-walks and lattice
gauge thoeries, application of renormalization group techniques to
reggeon field theory.
- Statistical Mechanics:
new consistency equations for lattice spin models, exact
solution of the infinite-range $Z(N)$-model, thermodynamics
of the Toda-chain, rigorous determination of the critical properties of
growth models with many absorbing states,
ergodic properties of microcanonical observables and comparison
with canonical averages,
rigorous and numerical studies of critical properties and first-order
phase transitions in wetting processes, discovery of anomalous heat
transport in nonlinear lattices, rigorous determination of the dependence
of the heat conductivity on the system size and on the dimensionality,
identification of normal heat conductivity in 1d models, study of the
problem in 2d and discovery of different anomalous behaviour below
an energy-density threshold.
- Dynamical Systems:
identification of an energy equipartition threshold in chains of nonlinear
oscillators (Fermi-Pasta-Ulam problem) and related relaxation mechanisms,
identification of the thermodynamic limit distribution for the spectrum of
Lyapunov exponents, relation between localization and Lyapunov vectors,
determination of the scaling properties of the maximum Lyapunov exponent
for chaotic coupled map lattices in the weak coupling limit, analytic
expression and scaling behaviour of the maximum Lyapunov
exponent for the FPU model and identification of the Strong
Stochasticity Threshold, relation between dynamical and statistical
properties in many degrees of freedom Hamiltonian systems,
relaxation to equilibrium in rare gas solids with impurities, rigorous
study of breather solutions in diatomic chains, tudy of breathers in
nonlinear chains, breathers in the DNLSE, anomalous diffusion from
deterministic models, application of the large deviation formalism to
turbulence.
- Complex Systems:
rigorous study of complex dynamical regimes and unpredictable evolution
emerging in linearly stable coupled map lattices, fuzzy phase transition
in 1d model, characterization of the phase diagram of the 2d model and
study of complex interface dynamics and of the critical properties of a
thick interface model, noise-driven synchronization in coupled map lattice
models and finding of two different universality classes characterizing
the synchronization transistion, identification of the dynamical
mechanism responsible for "stable chaos".
- Quantum Systems:
spectral properties of a Schrodinger operator with ultrametric potential,
proof of the existence of a singular continuos spectrum for the tight-binding
version of a ultrametric potential, renormalization-group
treatment of the spectral problem, Poissonian level-spacing statistics
in the three-particle toda lattice, semiclassical density of states in
quasi-integrable hamiltonian models, symmetry-breaking and the Bethe
approximation in models of itinerant electrons.
- Models of Biological Interest:
time series analysis of the R-R signal from electrocardiograms,
identification of different dynamical phase in a cellular automata
model for epidemic growth, study of gene-regulatory mechanisms in
cell population and identification of complex evolution in
genetic networks, dynamical approach to the study of the folding
and docking processes in proteins with implicit and explicit solvent,
study of neural network dynamics, denaturation transition in DNA.
- History of Physics:
studies in the history of physical sciences and contributions to
popularization of science.
INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIONS
Prof. Livi has been visiting several research centers and institutions
as an invited researcher. Short-term visits ( too many to be worth listing)
have been made in some of the main research centers in the world, with
activities in his field of interest.
For what concerns long-term visits (of the order of several months) his first
on-leave was as a NATO-Fellow at the Department
of Theoretical Physics of the University of Edinburgh (Scotland) in 1982.
From that time on he has been visiting the Universidad Nacional Autonoma
in Mexico City, the Institute des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques in Paris,
the Departement de Physique Theorique de l' Universite' de Geneve
(Swiss), the Departement de Physique Theorique de l' Ecole Polytechnique
Federale de Lausanne (Swiss), the Centre de Physique Theorique
du CNRS in Luminy (Marseille, France), the Max-Planck-Institut fur
