Alessandro Peri received his medical degree in 1989. From 1991 to 1994, he was a visiting Fellow at the Human Genetics Branch, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), National Institute of Health (NIH), Bethesda, MD. He achieved a PhD in Endocrinology in 1995 and his Specialty in Endocrinology in 1999. In 1997, Dr Peri became Assistant Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Florence, Italy, and then Associate Professor in 2004.
Peri is a member of the Italian Endocrine Society (former Council member), European Society of Endocrinology, Italian Group of Neuroendocrine Sciences, Scientific Committee of the Italian Meetings on Hypothalamic and Pituitary Diseases. He is member of the Editorial Board of L’Endocrinologo, and referee for a number of international scientific journals. In 1999, Prof. Peri was the winner of a travel grant awarded by the Endocrine Society, and in 2014 he was awarded the Aldo Pinchera Prize, the highest recognition of the Italian Society of Endocrinology, for the research activity carried out throughout his academic career. His clinical activity takes place at the Careggi University Hospital, Florence. Dr Peri teaches at the School of Medicine, School of Health Care Assistant and School of Biotechnology, University of Florence.
Peri has authored about 200 scientific articles, the majority published in peer-reviewed international journals (H index 44, more than 6250 citations). He has been an invited speaker and also authored over 100 communications at scientific meetings in Italy and elsewhere. His scientific research encompasses several areas, including neurohypophyseal hormones, endocrine and endocrine-related tumours, hormone-mediated neuroprotection, pathophysiology of reproduction and stem-cell differentiation.
