Biografia

Rosario Pugliese è Professore Ordinario (luglio 2018 - oggi) di Informatica presso il Dipartimento di Statistica, Informatica, Applicazioni “Giuseppe Parenti” (DiSIA) dell’Università degli Studi di Firenze. In precedenza è stato Ricercatore Universitario (giugno 1999 - dicembre 2002) e Professore Associato (dicembre 2002 - dicembre 2012) presso il Dipartimento di Sistemi e Informatica, e successivamente Professore Associato (gennaio 2013 - giugno 2018) presso il DiSIA. Ha conseguito il Dottorato di Ricerca in Informatica presso Sapienza Università di Roma nel 1996 e la Laurea (con lode) in Scienze dell’Informazione presso l’Università di Pisa nel 1991. Nel 1992 e, poi, dal 1996 al 1999, ha usufruito di borse di studio ed assegni di ricerca finanziati dal Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche e dall’Università degli Studi di Firenze.

Curriculum

Pugliese è autore di oltre 120 pubblicazioni (con recensione) su riviste internazionali, libri o atti di convegni. È stato membro del comitato di programma o del comitato organizzatore di conferenze e workshop internazionali e attualmente è membro dello Steering Committee di “International Conference on Coordination Models and Languages (COORDINATION)” e dell'Editorial Board of the open access journal Computers (ISSN 2073-431X). Ha contribuito a diversi progetti di ricerca finanziati dall'UE (progetti AGILE, MIKADO, SENSORIA, ASCENS), dal Ministero dell'Istruzione e della Ricerca (MIUR) (progetti NAPOLI, SALADIN, TOSCA, DISCO, CINA), dal Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR, progetto SP4) e da Microsoft Research (progetto NAPI). Pugliese è stato a capo dell'unità di ricerca di Firenze coinvolta nel progetto ASCENS (Autonomic Service-Component Ensembles), finanziato dall'UE, e recentemente ha coordinato il progetto “Assessment cybersecurity readiness”, finanziato da Regione Toscana. Pugliese è stato Coordinatore del Dottorato di Ricerca in Informatica e Applicazioni per i cicli XXIV-XXV e attualmente è membro del Collegio Docenti del Corso di Dottorato in Informatica amministrato dall'Università di Pisa, in collaborazione con l'Università degli Studi di Firenze e l'Università di Siena, e del Collegio Docenti del Dottorato di Interesse Nazionale in ``Cybersicurezza'', con sede amministrativa presso Scuola IMT Alti Studi - Lucca.
Pugliese ha ricoperto il ruolo di presidente del Consiglio unico dei Corsi di Studio in Informatica dell'Università degli Studi di Firenze, da novembre 2020 a ottobre 2024. Negli anni che vanno dal 2002 al 2005, Pugliese ha coordinato 2 progetti formativi per Moduli Professionalizzanti nelle nuove Lauree Universitarie dal titolo `Operatore Informatico Per l’Azienda’ (OIPA) finanziati dalla Regione Toscana con fondi del Fondo Sociale Europeo. Presso l’Università degli Studi di Firenze, per i Corsi di Laurea triennale, quinquennale (vecchio ordinamento), specialistica e magistrale in Informatica, Pugliese è stato o è titolare dei seguenti insegnamenti: Security Engineering (in lingua inglese), Sistemi Operativi, Sistemi Distribuiti e Reti di Calcolatori, Sistemi Concorrenti e Distribuiti, Programmazione di Reti, Linguaggi e Modelli per Sistemi Mobili, Modelli di Sistemi Sequenziali e Concorrenti, Metodi Formali dell’Informatica: Semantica della Concorrenza, Laboratorio di Informatica: Programmazione, Laboratorio di Sistemi Operativi e Laboratorio di Informatica: Programmazione di Sistema. Per i dottorati di ricerca in Informatica dell'Università degli Studi di Firenze, Pugliese ha tenuto i seguenti corsi: Introduzione ai calcoli di processo e relativi sistemi di tipo, Linguaggi e modelli per sistemi mobili, e Semantica della concorrenza, gli ultimi due in svariati anni accademici.

Interessi

L’attività di ricerca di Pugliese è finalizzata alla comprensione dei problemi fondazionali ed applicativi sollevati dai moderni sistemi concorrenti, distribuiti e con mobilità, quali ad esempio le architetture orientate ai servizi, i sistemi di calcolo autonomici e i sistemi cyber-fisici, operanti in ambienti non completamente determinati e mutevoli. Lo scopo è individuare modelli, linguaggi e strumenti formali capaci di catturare aspetti differenti e specifici di tali sistemi complessi, permettendo così lo studio di problemi riguardanti, per esempio, interazione, connetività, adattività e sicurezza. Calcoli di processo, semantiche osservazionali, sistemi di tipo, logiche modali e temporali sono alcuni dei metodi formali e delle tecniche di analisi utilizzati in tali studi. Nel lavoro di ricerca di Pugliese, gli studi teorici e metodologici volti alla definizione di strumenti descrittivi appropriati e di tecniche di dimostrazione trattabili sono integrati sia con il progetto e la realizzazione sia di linguaggi sperimentali per la programmazione distribuita, che con strumenti (semi-)automatici di supporto alla verifica di proprietà.

Rosario PUGLIESE

Biography

Rosario Pugliese is a full professor of Computer Science (Informatica) at Dipartimento di Statistica, Informatica, Applicazioni (DiSIA). Previously, he has been an associate professor and assistant professor (first appointment in June 1999) at Dipartimento di Sistemi e Informatica, University of Florence. Pugliese has received a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science (Informatica) from the Sapienza University of Rome in 1996, and a Laurea degree cum laude in Computer Science (Scienze dell'Informazione) from the University of Pisa in 1991. In 1992 and, then, from 1996 till 1999, Pugliese has benefited from research fellowships and grants funded by the National Research Council (CNR) and by the University of Florence.

Curriculum

Pugliese authored more than 120 peer-reviewed publications in international journals, books, or conference proceedings. He has been a member of the program committee or the organizing committee of international conferences and workshops. Currently, he is a member of the Steering Committee of the "International Conference on Coordination Models and Languages (COORDINATION)" and of the Editorial Board of the open-access journal Computers (ISSN 2073-431X). He has contributed to several research projects funded by the EU (projects AGILE, MIKADO, SENSORIA, ASCENS), the Italian Ministry of Education and Research (MIUR) (projects NAPOLI, SALADIN, TOSCA, DISCO, CINA), the National Research Council (CNR, project SP4), and Microsoft Research (project NAPI). Pugliese has been the leader of the Firenze research unit involved in the EU-funded project ASCENS (Autonomic Service-Component Ensembles). Recently, he has coordinated the project "Assessment cybersecurity readiness", funded by Regione Toscana. Pugliese has been the Coordinator of the Ph.D. program in Informatica e Applicazioni at the University of Florence. Currently, he is a member of the Board of Study of the Ph.D. program in Computer Science administered by the University of Pisa, in cooperation with the University of Firenze and the University of Siena, and of the Board of Study of the Ph.D. program of National Interest in "Cybersecurity", administered by IMT School of Advanced Studies - Lucca.
Pugliese served as President of the Board of Study courses in Computer Science at the University of Florence from November 2020 to October 2024. In the years from 2002 to 2005, Pugliese has been the Coordinator of two formative projects `Moduli Professionalizzanti nelle nuove Lauree Universitarie’, entitled 'Operatore Informatico per l'Azienda' (OIPA), funded by Regione Toscana through the Fondo Sociale Europeo. At the University of Florence, for the three-year, five-year (old system), specialist, and master's degree courses in Computer Science, Pugliese held or holds the following courses: Security Engineering (in English), Operating Systems, Distributed Systems and Computer Networks, Distributed and Concurrent Systems, Network Programming, Languages and Models for Mobile Systems, Models of Sequential and Concurrent Systems, Formal methods: concurrency semantics, Programming Lab, Operating Systems Lab, and System Programming Lab. For Ph.D. programs in Computer Science at the University of Florence, Pugliese held the following courses: Introduction to Process Calculi and related Type Systems, Languages and Models for Mobile Systems, and Concurrency Semantics, the last two ones in several academic years.

Rosario PUGLIESE

Interest

Pugliese's research activity aims at tackling those foundational and applicative problems raised by today's concurrent, distributed, and mobile systems, such as, e.g., service-oriented architectures, autonomic computing systems, and cyber-physical systems, working within open-ended and highly dynamic environments. The goal is to devise formal models, languages, and tools capable of capturing different and specific aspects of such complex systems, thus enabling the study of connectivity, interaction, adaptivity, and security issues. Process calculi, observational semantics, types, modal and temporal logics are some of the formal methods and analysis techniques exploited in his investigations. In Pugliese's research activity, theoretical and methodological investigations to define appropriate descriptive tools and tractable proof techniques are integrated with the project and the implementation of both experimental languages for distributed programming and (semi-)automatic supporting tools for property verification.
