Nato a Parma il 29.11.1957.  Ha conseguito la maturità scientifica nel 1976 presso il Liceo Scientifico G. Castelnuovo di Firenze  con la votazione di 56/60.

Ha frequentato successivamente l’Università degli Studi di Firenze. Nell’anno accademico 1978-79 è stato allievo interno presso la Patologia Chirurgica diretta dal Prof. L. Loddi. Dal 1980 allievo interno presso la Clinica Medica diretta dal Prof. G.G. Neri Serneri .  Ha conseguito la laurea in Medicina e Chirurgia nella sessione estiva del 1982 con il massimo dei voti e la lode discutendo una tesi sperimentale ( correlatore Prof. G.G.Neri Serneri ). 

Ammesso alla Scuola di Specializzazione in Cardiologia dell’Università degli Studi di Firenze è risultato vincitore di concorso nazionale per una borsa di studio ministeriale per la frequenza alla Scuola di Specializzazione . Nel 1986 ha conseguito la Specializzazione in Cardiologia con il massimo dei voti e la lode discutendo una tesi sulla fisiopatologia della circolazione polmonare. 

Dal  maggio 1983 al luglio 1984 ha prestato servizio militare come sottotenente medico addetto all’infermeria presso la Scuola Sottufficiali dei Carabinieri di Firenze.  

Nel 1990 ha conseguito il diploma di Dottore di Ricerca in Fisiopatologia Clinica  discutendo una tesi sulla regolazione del circolo polmonare. 

Dal 1985 al 1991 ha prestato servizio come medico specialista cardiologo presso la Unità Coronarica Mobile di Firenze. Nello stesso periodo ha svolto attività come specialista cardiologo ambulatoriale incaricato presso diverse Unità Sanitarie Locali dell’attuale azienda Ospedaliera 10 di Firenze  . 

Dalla laurea il Dr Rostagno ha continuato a frequentare l’Istituto di Clinica Medica  dell’Università di Firenze  svolgendo attività assistenziale ed attività di ricerca . 

Nel 1988 ha trascorso un periodo di formazione di 4 mesi  presso il laboratorio di emodinamica della Divisione Ospedaliera del Policlinico Le Molinette di Torino ( Primario Dr M. Casaccia ).

Nel maggio 2000 ha trascorso un periodo di formazione presso il centro trapianti cardiaci del Rush Presbiterian Hospital di Chicago diretto dalla Prof. Maria Rosa Costanzo . 

Nel 1991 ha vinto concorso per assistente di ruolo  di medicina presso la Azienda Ospedaliera di Careggi e nel 1993 concorso per aiuto di cardiologia presso la stessa Azienda Ospedaliera. 

Nel Febbraio 2001 ha partecipato a concorso pubblico per dirigente di II livello in Cardiologia presso l’ASL 11 della Toscana risultando idoneo alla prova di esame.  

Il  Prof .Carlo Rostagno nel marzo 2004  è risultato vincitore di  valutazione comparativa per Professore Associato in Medicina Interna prendendo servizio come Professore Associato –dipartimento area critica-  il 1 febbraio dell’anno 2005 e assegnato alla SOD di  Cardiologia Generale 1 (Direttore Prof. Gian Franco Gensini ).  

Prof  Carlo Rostagno  is currently  Director of the Internal Medicine 3  and Post-surgical Care Internal Medicine  of AOU Careggi – Florence – Italy 

He graduated, with honors, from the School of Medicine of  Florence University in 1982 with the a thesis on the modification of inhibitor Protein C in unstable angina.. In 1986 he achieved his Cardiology Specialty Degree with  a thesis on Pathophysiology  of pulmonary hypertension obtaining the score of 70/70 with honors.

He had a 6 months training in hemodynamic laboratory of the Molinette  Hospital – Torino  under the tutelage of the Chief  Dr Michele Casaccia ( January- June 1987 ). In 1990 he accomplished the PhD degree in Clinic Pathophysiology  at the University of Firenze , with a  thesis on  mechanisms of regulation of pulmonary circulation . In May 2000 he attended a period of study at Heart Transplant Center of  the Rush Presbiterian Hospital – Chicago-  Chief Prof. Maria Rosa Costanzo  In february 2005 he was called as Associate Professor in Internal Medicine in the University of Florence  

On the clinical side prof  Rostagno  began his activity as  assistant in the Department of Clinica Medica  of the University of Firenze  ( Chief . Prof Neri Serneri ) therefore  being responsible of the of the ward  from 1990 to 1997 .  Meanwhile he continued the activity in hemodynamic laboratory ,  with particular care  on  the study of  patients with valve heart disease ,  and trained in echocardiography under the tutelage of Prof  Fantini and Galanti  .      From November 1997 to September 2001 he has been  responsible of the Coronary care Unit of  Department of Clinica Medica e Cardiologia of the University of Firenze  (  Chief  Prof. G.F.Gensini ).  From October  2001  to September  2011 he has been  responsible of postintensive care Unit of Heart Surgery Department of AOU Careggi  . In this period he acquired particular experience in the intra operative trans oesophageal  evaluation of patients undergoing heart surgery .  From September 2011 he is  Director of Internal Medicine and Post-surgical Care  of AOU Careggi – Florence – Italy . From November 2021 he is Director of Interna Medicine 3 maintaining ad interim direction of Internal Medicine and Post-surgical Care.  In 2021 he has been elected Director of the Specialization School of Emergency-Urgency medicine of the University of Florence .  Since 2017 coordinates the II level Master on Clinical competence in heart failure of of the University of Florence.  He has been the principal investigator of two research projects of  Italian Helth ministry (:” Evalution of a multidisciplinary team case management in clinical outcome in a tertiary traumatology Centre ”  RF: 2010-2316600 and   2018 NET-2018-12368077)

Prof Rostagno  has long term worked in the field of pathophysiology  of unstable angina  and on the regulatory mechanisms of pulmonary circulation  contributing to the  Annual Relaton  at The congress of  the Società Italiana  di Medicina interna  titled  “ Physiology and Pathophysiology of  pulmonary circulation “  in  Rome  -1987.   Thearfter  primary interests included methods of prognostic evaluation in  patients with heart failure ,  evaluation of  changes in autonomic  baroceptorial  reflex  in these patients and their prognostic role  and  finally the prognostic role  of cardiac arrhythmias in  patients with heart failure. More recently the main fields  of research  were  the effects of radiofrequency ablation of atrial fibrillation in patients undergoing mitral valve surgery ,   the incidence and prognostic effects of postoperative atrial fibrillation  ,  the  prognostic evaluation and  the results of surgical treatment of infective endocarditis   , the pathophysiological modifications of   left ventricle after mitral valve repair in ischemic and non ischemic mitral regurgitation . He has been involved in a prospective research on cardiotoxic effects of atypical antipsychotic drug clozapine   .  More recently is interest was directed to several aspects of perioperative medicine. 

Prof . Rostagno  has published more than one hundred  articles in international journals and more than  50  articles in national journals. He presented original contributions in several International and national  Meetings and was also frequently called as invited speaker 

Every year Prof  Rostagno  is requested to review about 80 articles for American and European peer-reviewed Cardiology journals including European Heart Journal , European Journal of Heart Failure , Chest , American Journal of Cardiology .
