Professore Ordinario di Patologia Vegetale Forestale (SSD AGR/12; SC 07/B1) presso il Dipartimento di Scienze e Tecnologie Agrarie, Alimentari, Ambientali e Forestali (DAGRI) dell’Università di Firenze.
Dottore di ricerca in Patologia Vegetale Forestale nel 1994. Ricercatore CNR-IPSP nel 1997. Professore incaricato di Micologia e Micologia Applicata presso l’Università di Firenze dal 1999 al 2001. Professore associato di Patologia Vegetale (AGR/12) presso l’Università di Firenze nel 2005.
Visiting Professor in Gran Bretagna, Australia e Brasile.
Fellow della BSPP (British Society for Plant Pathology). Socio dell’APS (American Phytopathological Society), dell’MPU (Mediterranean Phytopathological Union), della SIPaV (Società Italiana di Patologia Vegetale) e dell’UMI (Unione Micologia Italiana). Membro del “Plant Pathogen and Disease Detection Committee” e del “Mycology Committee” dell'American Phytopathological Society.
Accademico Ordinario dell’Accademia Italiana di Scienze Forestali.
Membro dell'Editorial Board delle riviste scientifiche Plant Pathology, Frontiers in Microbiology e Micologia Italiana.
Per circa 20 anni, Chair e/o co-Chair IUFRO. Attualmente Hofficeholder IUFRO, con ruolo di Coordinatore del gruppo 7.02.05 – “Rusts of forest trees”.

La sua attività di ricerca, condotta con approcci convenzionali e innovativi, è incentrata su temi di tassonomia, epidemiologia, diagnostica, lotta ai funghi fitopatogeni.
