Biografia

La mia attività di ricerca si snoda lungo tre percorsi principali: l’opera di James Joyce e il Modernismo, le relazioni tra letteratura e storia della medicina e il mondo culturale anglo-fiorentino tra Ottocento e Novecento. Questi tre orientamenti trovano basi comuni in un mio spiccato interesse per la storia del testo, l’analisi dei manoscritti ottocenteschi e novecenteschi e la ricerca di materiali d’archivio o testimonianze scrittorie inedite. Ho spesso trovato in tali punti di partenza terreno fertile per sviluppare indagini di taglio interdisciplinare e intertestuale, poiché intertestualità, interdisciplinarità e teorie post-strutturaliste dell’analisi dei manoscritti condividono radici epistemologiche comuni relative alla nozione di opera come ‘ordito’, o trama di tensioni interne ed esterne al processo creativo. A livello di tematiche, tangenzialmente a più percorsi di ricerca ho approfondito l’analisi di rappresentazioni o espressioni di varie forme di marginalità, quali migrazione, esilio, e disturbi del pensiero o del comportamento. Inoltre, ho seguito linee d’indagine che si concentrano sui rapporti culturali, ideologici e letterari tra Regno Unito e Italia. Dal 2002 ad oggi, oltre a documentare la mia attività di ricerca in circa quaranta lavori pubblicati o in pubblicazione, ho presentato i risultati dei miei studi in circa trenta convegni, e ho organizzato o collaborato all'organizzazione di vari eventi accademici nazionali e internazionali.

Critica genetica e studi dei processi di scrittura: analisi dei manoscritti moderni, delle fasi redazionali, e delle dinamiche di collaborazione e trasmissione testuale tra autori e cerchie letterarie.
Letteratura e storia delle idee, con particolare attenzione ai rapporti tra discorsi letterari e saperi medici, alla costruzione culturale del corpo e della soggettività, e alle forme di narrazione di traumi, malattia, cura e vulnerabilità.
Letteratura inglese tra Illuminismo, Romanticismo e Modernismo, con un focus sulle modalità di intertestualità, riscrittura, appropriazione e memoria culturale, e sulle reti transnazionali (in particolare i rapporti anglo-italiani).
Studio delle culture editoriali e delle pratiche di stampa, con attenzione alla circolazione dei testi, ai periodici, alle edizioni, e ai media della modernità letteraria.
Ricezione, traduzione, e adattamento di autori inglesi in Italia, con particolare riguardo alla mediazione del canone tra Otto e Novecento.

Ilaria NATALI

Biography

Ilaria Natali is Associate Professor of English Literature at the University of Florence. Her research focuses on genetic criticism and the study of writing processes, on the intersections between literature and the history of medicine, and on the cultural networks that shape the relations between the anglophone world and the Italian context from the Enlightenment to Romanticism and Modernism. She also works on print cultures, textual circulation, and the reception of English and Irish authors in Italy. She is Editor-in-Chief of the scholarly journal LEA – Lingue e Letterature d’Oriente e d’Occidente.

Research Interests

Genetic criticism and writing processes, with a focus on modern manuscripts, drafting stages, and the dynamics of collaboration and textual transmission within literary circles.
Literature and the history of ideas, with particular attention to the intersections between literary discourse and medical knowledge; the cultural construction of the body and subjectivity; and narrative forms of trauma, illness, care, and vulnerability.
English and Irish literatures from the Enlightenment to Romanticism and Modernism, with a focus on intertextuality, rewriting, appropriation, cultural memory, and transnational networks (especially Anglo-Italian literary relations).
Print cultures and editorial practices, with attention to the circulation of texts, periodical culture, scholarly editions, and the media ecology of literary modernity.
Reception, translation, and adaptation of literatures in English in Italy, with particular regard to the mediation and reshaping of the canon between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
