Tommaso Lotti è attualmente Ricercatore a tempo determinato (RTDa) presso il Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile e Ambientale dell'Università di Firenze (Italia). In precedenza, ha lavorato al Politecnico di Milano (Italia) dove ha ottenuto una prestigiosa fellowship individuale H2020-MSCA. Ha conseguito due dottorati di ricerca in Ingegneria Ambientale con focus sui processi di trattamento delle acque reflue, sia in Italia (Dottorato congiunto tra Università di Firenze e Università della Basilicata, 2012) che nei Paesi Bassi (Delft University of Technology, 2016) e ha ricoperto posizioni da post-doc in entrambe queste Università. Tommaso Lotti è stato premiato per i suoi contributi innovativi nel trattamento delle acque reflue per lo sviluppo del processo di rimozione completamente autotrofa dell'azoto per applicazioni in linea acque (premio Jaap van der Graaf 2014; Premio Waternet Watercycle Innovation 2017). I suoi studi pioneristici di processi biologici innovativi per il trattamento sostenibile ed economico di acque reflue municipali ed industriali, insieme al Prof van Loosdrecht (EBT, TU-Delft), hanno contribuito in modo significativo al cambiamento di paradigma circa gli impianti di depurazione, da semplice trattamento delle acque reflue a bioraffineria per il recupero di risorse in un contesto di economia circolare. Tommaso Lotti ha pubblicato oltre 40 tra libri e articoli scientifici apparsi su riviste ad alto impatto tra cui Water Research, Environmental Science and Technology, Chemical Engineering Journal, Applied and Environmental Microbiology, Scientific Reports, Biotechnology and Bioengineering, ecc., con più di 3300 citazioni (Scopus). È stato relatore per presentazioni orali in più di 20 conferenze internazionali ed è stato invitato come relatore principale e come presidente in conferenze e simposi internazionali. Ha partecipato a diversi progetti di ricerca nazionali e internazionali, essendo PI in un MSCA-IF e PRIN. È inventore in due brevetti internazionali validi in USA and EU.

L'autore ha contribuito alla ricerca su temi quali nitrificazione e trattamento biologico delle acque reflue, Anammox, recupero e riutilizzo delle risorse, sostanze polimeriche extracellulari (EPS), fanghi granulari, tecnologia di trattamento sostenibile delle acque reflue, rimozione e recupero di nutrienti; filiere di trattamento efficienti sotto il profilo delle risorse, con bilancio energetico neutro/positivo, minime emissioni di gas serra; Rimozione dell'azoto: nitritazione/anammox parziale mainstream e sidestream, nitritazione/denitritazione, denitrificazione a base di S; Water/energy nexus.Il suo attuale interesse e le sue attività di ricerca si concentrano principalmente sulle innovazioni (bio)tecnologiche che consentono una trasformazione sostenibile degli attuali impianti di trattamento delle acque reflue nelle bioraffinerie. Con l’obiettivo del recupero delle risorse per lo sviluppo dell’economia circolare, collabora in progetti di ricerca e sviluppo con accademici delle scienze chimiche/biochimiche/agronomiche e con industrie del settore idrico, chimico, agronomico, cartario, conciario e tessile, a livello nazionale ed internazionale.

Tommaso Lotti is currently an Assistant Professor (RTDa) at the Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Florence (Italy). Previously he was at Politecnico di Milano (Italy) where he got a prestigious H2020-MSCA Individual Fellowship grant. He got two PhDs in Environmental Engineering with focus on wastewater treatment processes, both in Italy (joint Doctorate between University of Florence and University of Basilicata, 2012) and in The Netherlands (Delft University of Technology, 2016) and have held post-docs positions in both these Universities. Tommaso Lotti has been awarded for his breakthrough contributions in wastewater treatment for the development of the completely autotrophic nitrogen removal process for mainstream application (Jaap van der Graaf award 2014; Waternet Watercycle Innovation Award 2017). By pioneering an innovative biological process that serves as a cost-effective, robust and sustainable way of removing pollutants in municipal and industrial used water, together with Prof van Loosdrecht (EBT, TU-Delft), he has contributed significantly to the paradigm shift from wastewater treatment to wastewater biorefinery for resource recovery and the relative energy-water nexus in the context of circular economy. Tommaso Lotti has published over 40 among books and scientific articles appeared in high impact venues including Water Research, Environmental Science and Technology, Chemical Engineering Journal, Applied and Environmental Microbiology, Scientific Reports, Biotechnology and Bioengineering, etc, with more than 3300 citations (Scopus). He was speaker for oral presentations in more than 20 international conferences and has been invited as Key-note speaker and as Chairman in international conferences and symposia. He has participated in several national and international research project, being PI in a H2020-MSCA-IF and PRIN. He is inventor in two US and European patents.
