Professor Carlo Di Mario
MD, PhD, FRCP, FSCAI, FESC, FACC
Born in Modena, Italy, Professor Di Mario graduated in Medicine and specialised in Cardiology at the University of Padua in 1980. He then trained in interventional Cardiology completing the Fellowship at the University of Padua in 1984. He then moved to the Erasmus University of Rotterdam, Netherlands, where he completed a PhD thesis, moved in 1996 as research and clinical director for interventional cardiology at the University Vita-Salute of the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, and was appointed Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust in 2003. Between January 2003 and November 2016 Professor Di Mario worked as Professor of Clinical Cardiology, NHLI, Imperial College of Sciences, Medicine & Technology, and Consultant Cardiologist of the Royal Brompton & Harefield Foundation Trust, London. He was appointed in 2010 Senior Investigator of the National Institute of Health Research.
He became Full Professor of Cardiology at the University of Florence and Director of Structural Interventional Cardiology in the Careggi University Hospital, Florence, Italy in September 2016. He maintains an active clinical involvement in coronary angioplasty with special interest in treatment of chronic total occlusions, bifurcations, calcified lesions and diffuse disease. He is certified implanter for the Medtronic Evolut R and Pro, Edwards Sapien 3 and Ultra transcatheter aortic valves. He has 13 years of experience with MitraClips and started implants of CardioBand in 2017.
He served as Secretary of the Working Group on Interventional Cardiology of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and became President of the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions between 2009 and 2011. Between 2012 and 2014 he served as Councillor of the European Society of Cardiology. He has been a member of the Writing Committee or a Reviewer of many ESC Guidelines including sudden death, percutaneous coronary angioplasty, STEMI, Myocardial Revascularisation, Stable Angina, Non-cardiac Surgery, Diabetes and Cardiac Diseases. He is first/last author or coauthor of many Expert Consensus documents (intravascular ultrasound, PCI in non surgical centres, optical coherence tomography, Rotablation, radial approach, renal denervation, intracoronary imaging guidance). He is current President, elected in September 2020, of the EuroCTO Club.
His interest and proficiency in teaching is confirmed by more than 1150 lectures in National and International congresses over the last 35 years. He has started a European training programme for interventional cardiology fellows, regularly held in London 2005 and 2012. In the last 10 years he has co-organized many live case demonstrations transmitted from the Royal Brompton to the ACC, ESC, JIM and TCT congresses. He has served as PhD examiner for Imperial College, the Karolinska University of Stockholm, the Universities of Milan, Catania, Leuven, Rotterdam, Copenhagen. He was supervisor of a PhD student completing a thesis on renal denervation in heart failure with preserved left ventricular function in Imperial College and of two PhD students who started a thesis on structural interventions in Florence University. He was supervisor of 17 MD theses, 3 in London and 14 in Florence. He holds regular classes and exams for the IV year of the medical school of the University of Florence (450 per year) and the 43 Cardiology Fellows of the Cardiology Specialisation Program of the same University.
Professor Di Mario is member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Journal of the American College of Cardiology Interventions, the European Heart Journal, Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions. He is Associate Editor of the International Journal of Cardiology, Internal and Emergency Medicine and the European Heart Journal Cardiovascular Imaging. He is Section Editor for Reviews/State-of-the-Art manuscripts for EuroIntervention. He has written 679 original papers, invited editorials, case reports and review papers in peer reviewed journals, has edited 5 books and contributed chapters to more than 95 cardiology books including Topol’s Textbook of Interventional Cardiology, the ESC Textbook of Cardiology, CathSap 3 and 4 of the ACC, the PCI-EAPCI Textbook of Interventional Cardiology, the Braunwald Heart Disease (ed 2014).
Professor Di Mario pioneered the use of intracoronary Doppler, pressure measurement (FFR and iFR), intravascular ultrasound, optical coherence tomography and near infrared spectroscopy. These techniques have become the gold standard for physiological assessment of lesion severity and have revolutionised the technique of stent implantation with the use of high pressure dilatation which led to the universal application of this method in interventional cardiology. Prof di Mario was Principal Investigator of the CARESS in AMI trial, a large multicentre trial showing that patients who receive fibrinolytic therapy for ST-elevation myocardial infarction benefit from early angioplasty. This trial and a subsequent meta-analysis have led to a change in the European Society of Cardiology and AHA/ACC Guidelines of treatment of STEMI patients. He has been global or local Principal Investigator in the following multicentre trials: DEBATE trial (coPI), DESTINI trial, CARESS Study (PI), RECOVERS (coPI), HELP-AMI (PI), MICROSCOPE (coPI), CARDia Trial (Local PI), Reality Study (Local PI), Jupiter II Study (local PI), Eurostar 2 Study (local PI), Acuity Study (Local PI), Progress Study (local PI), Zomaxx I Trial (local PI), Leaders Study (local PI + substudy PI), TOP Study (local PI), GLIDER Registry (PI), Resolute III Trial (Local PI), DISSOLVE II Study (Local PI), EXCEL (Local PI), EuroCTO trial (Local PI), ILLUMIEN (Local PI), Lipid Rich Plaque (European PI), DEFINE-FLAIR (Local PI), ABSORB UK Registry (Local PI), GHOST Registry, VEST I and IV (co-PI), Shockwave DISRUPT I&II(worldwide co-PI), HUYGENS (local PI), ENVISAGE-TAVI (local PI), VECTORIUS-LAP (worldwide PI), ARCANGELO (local PI), SANTORINI (local PI).
