RESEARCH INTERESTS
Piano’s research interests mostly deal with literary Greek and Latin texts found on papyri, mainly but not only of philosophical nature. She specialized on ancient Orphism and Presocratic Philosophy, being an expert of the Derveni papyrus, on which she published a monograph and several articles (among which the article “Derveni Papyrus” for the “Oxford Classical Dictionary online https://doi.org/10.1093/acrefore/9780199381135.013.8121 and the bibliography “Derveni Papyrus” for the “Oxford Bibliography Online (OBO)" in Classics, online doi:10.1093/obo/9780195389661-0430), aiming at clarifying aspects concerning the religious and philosophical contents of the book, its historical context of fruition, also in connection with its finding, and the bibliological features of the roll, studied also through its digital reconstruction. The results she achieved up to present on the reconstruction of the opening of the roll and on the constitution of the text it contains will be published in a new critical edition of the first columns forthcoming for the Oxford University Press.
Piano also published on Euripides, ancient Stoicism, the Latin poem known as “Carmen de bello Actiaco”. Having recognized in P.Herc. 1067 a part of the historical work by Seneca the Elder, she published the editio princeps of the papyrus, accompanied by a bibliological reconstruction of the roll, a palaeographic analysis of the writing and a philological commentary.
