Isabella Martini è nata nel 1981 ed è Ricercatrice a tempo pieno di Lingua Inglese presso il Dipartimento di Scienze dell'Educazione, Lingue, Interculture, Letterature e Psicologia dell'Università di Firenze.Ha completato i suoi studi universitari a Pisa, dove ha conseguito la laurea in Lingue e Letterature Straniere con una tesi sperimentale sulla comunicazione medico-paziente in ambito chirurgico pediatrico. Si è poi specializzata in traduzione con un laurea magistrale e con un Master di secondo livello in traduzione dei testi postcoloniali in lingua inglese, per concludere con un dottorato in Letterature Straniere moderne, sempre presso l’Università di Pisa.
Ha curato docenze e laboratori di comunicazione in connessione con l’area medico-paziente; ha lavorato a vari livelli in ambito editoriale (traduttrice, redattrice, agente letterario), per poi dedicarsi quasi a tempo pieno alla docenza universitaria in ambito nazionale e internazionale. Ha tenuto corsi di lingua e traduzione inglese per le Università di Cagliari e Firenze, e presso la sede fiorentina della Scuola Superiore per Mediatori Linguistici Carlo Bo.
Ha progettato e insegnato corsi di comunicazione, pubbliche relazioni e social media, di scrittura accademica e letteratura in ambito internazionale (recentemente per Syracuse University, University of California e University of Minnesota). Svolge anche attività di consulenza su soft skills e comunicazione, finora in ambito aziendale e manifatturiero (Piaggio, Leroy Merlin) con strumenti basati sull’analisi della conversazione e sulla Theory U, la tecnologia sociale elaborata all’interno del MIT per rinnovare l’apprendimento, la leadership e la gestione dei sistemi. Ha condotto ricerche sul potenziale applicativo di Theory U per un cambiamento sistemico della didattica, universitaria e non, ed è membro fondatore degli hub nati a Firenze e Prato e collegati al Presencing Institute del MIT; negli hub ha facilitato il corso U.lab 1x.
Ha pubblicato sul racconto anglo-canadese e sulla traduzione, mentre le sue pubblicazioni più recenti si concentrano sulla sua ricerca in linguistica inglese, in particolare sull'inglese storico e sull’uso della linguistica dei corpora e della discourse analysis per analizzare dal punto di vista della pragmatica storica il linguaggio giornalistico. È inoltre membro del Corpora and Historical English Research Group (CHER - Unità di Firenze) e dell'Associazione Italiana di Anglistica (AIA).

I miei interessi di ricerca hanno riguardato la narrativa breve, gli studi sulla traduzione, l'analisi del discorso medico e, più di recente, la linguistica dei corpora applicata a historical news discourse con un focus specifico sulle letters to the editor. Ho presentato i risultati delle mie attività di ricerca sia in numerose conferenze internazionali che in varie pubblicazioni accademiche.

Isabella Martini graduated in Foreign Languages and Literature (University of Pisa) with an experimental thesis on doctor-patient communication in paediatric surgery that has now become a book (Talking Paediatric Surgery. Towards a deeper understanding of Doctor-Patient discourse). She specialized in translation with a master's degree and a second level post-graduate course in translation of postcolonial texts in English, to conclude with a PhD in modern foreign literature at the University of Pisa.
She taught workshops on doctor-patient communication at the University of Pisa and at the Ospedale Santa Chiara. She worked in the publishing industry as translator, foreign rights manager, editor, literary agent, and dealing with calls for funding editorial activities (translation, publication). She taught English language and translation courses for the Universities of Cagliari and at the Florentine branch of the Carlo Bo Higher School for Linguistic Mediators. She has designed and taught courses in communication, public relations and social media, academic writing and literature in the international arena (recently for the Florence study-abroad programs of Syracuse University, University of California, and University of Minnesota). She also carried out consultancy activities on soft skills and communication in the business and manufacturing fields (Piaggio, Leroy Merlin) with tools based on conversation analysis and on Theory U, the social technology developed within MIT to renew learning, leadership, and systems management.
She is now full-time English Language Researcher at the Department of Education, Languages, Interculture, Literatures and Psychology (FORLILPSI) of the University of Florence. She has published on conversational linguistics and medical discourse analysis, on translation, and on Anglo-Canadian short fiction. Her recent academic publications focus on historical English, historical pragmatics and corpus-assisted discourse analysis applied to the language in the news. She is a member of The Corpora and Historical English Research Group (CHER) of the University of Florence, and of the Italian Association of English Studies (AIA).
