Ho conseguito il Dottorato di Ricerca in Scienze Politiche e Sociali - Geopolitica (Storia e istituzioni dell'Asia) presso l'Università di Pisa nel 2014 con una tesi sugli effetti della fine dell'Impero Ch'ing e la nascita della Repubblica Cinese sugli interessi britannici in Alta Asia. Tra il 2017 ed il 2022 ho continuato le mie ricerche presso l'Università di Kyoto dove sono attualmente Affiliated Associate Professor presso il Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS). Dal 2025 sono professore associato di Storia e istituzioni dell'Asia presso il Dipartimento di Scienze Politiche e Sociali dell'Università degli Studi di Firenze. Ho insegnato come Lecturer presso lo Sherubtse College - Royal University of Bhutan e presso la Thammasat University come Visiting Professor. Nel 2011 sono stato eletto Fellow della Royal Asiatic of Great Britain and Ireland. Sono autore di Mongolian Independence and the British: Geopolitics and Diplomacy in High Asia, 1911–1916, E-International Relations, Bristol, England 2022 (open access).

Principali ambiti di ricerca: storia politica del Bhutan, con particolare attenzione alle sue relazioni con l’Impero britannico e alle dinamiche del “Grande Gioco” himalayano; storia del Regno di Lān Nā; ruolo delle comunità parsi durante il Raj e nel Sud-Est asiatico;  relazioni anglo-cinesi dalla dinastia Qing alla Repubblica di Cina.

Ulteriori interessi: la definizione e l’applicazione pratica della Felicità Interna Lorda in Bhutan; il diritto e la governance dei mercati finanziari nell’Asia orientale; la rappresentazione dell’Asia nei fumetti Disney.

I received my PhD (Dottorato di Ricerca) in Political and Social Sciences – Geopolitics (History and Institutions of Asia) from the University of Pisa in 2014, with a dissertation on the consequences of the fall of the Ch’ing Empire and the birth of the Chinese Republic on British interests in High Asia. Between 2017 and 2022, I continued my research at Kyoto University, where I am currently an Affiliated Associate Professor at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS). Since 2025, I have been serving as an Associate Professor of History and Institutions of Asia at the Department of Political and Social Sciences, University of Florence.

I previously taught as a Lecturer at Sherubtse College – Royal University of Bhutan, and as a Visiting Professor at Thammasat University. Main research areas: political history of Bhutan, with particular attention to its relations with the British Empire and the dynamics of the Himalayan “Great Game”; the history of the Kingdom of Lān Nā; the role of Parsi communities during the Raj and across Southeast Asia; and Anglo-Chinese relations from the Ch’ing dynasty to the Republic of China.

Additional interests: the definition and practical application of Gross National Happiness in Bhutan; the law and governance of financial markets in East Asia; and the representation of Asia in Disney Comics.
