Tiziano Distefano is Associate Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics and Management of the University of Florence and Coordinator of the PhD Programme in Social Sciences for Sustainability and Wellbeing (S3W – https://www.s3w.unifi.it/). His research lies in the field of ecological economics, with a particular focus on ecological macroeconomics, socio-ecological systems modelling, the sustainability of energy and material transitions, water resource management, and environmental inequalities. His scientific path stems from an interest in the complexity of economic and natural systems and from the conviction that economics should engage more deeply with the life sciences, physics, the social sciences, and democratic processes.
After completing his PhD in Economics, Markets and Institutions at the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca, with a dissertation in ecological economics, he carried out research and teaching activities in several national and international contexts. He has been a Visiting Scholar at the University of Cambridge, a Visiting Researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Virginia Tech, and a Visiting Professor at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, and Universidad San Sebastián in Chile. These experiences have contributed to shaping a strongly interdisciplinary and international research perspective, attentive both to high-income countries and to the crucial role of the Global South in ecological transitions.
He has served as Principal Investigator of the PRIN PNRR project MUST4Water, Scientific Coordinator of the University of Florence unit within the TNE EcoNet LatAm project, and Scientific Director of two Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs), conceived as research and training activities funded by EUNIWELL. He previously coordinated the MIT-UNIPI EMERITUS project, devoted to ecological macroeconomics for an equitable and resilient transition in the United States. Since 2024, he has been an elected member of the Board of the International Society for Ecological Economics.
He has published in international journals such as Nature Sustainability, Ecological Economics, Energy Economics, Journal of Cleaner Production, World Development, and Structural Change and Economic Dynamics. He is also Executive Guest Editor of the Special Issue “Ecological Macroeconomics: Exploring Alternative Futures” in Ecological Economics and co-editor of the first Handbook of Ecological Macroeconomics. Alongside his research, he is particularly committed to the training of young researchers, contributing to the S3W PhD Programme in Social Sciences for Sustainability and Wellbeing and to the development of courses, summer schools, and international conferences in ecological economics and ecological macroeconomics.
I am Associate Professor in Ecological Economics at the Department of Economics and Management (DISEI) of the University of Florence, where I also serve as Coordinator of the Academic Board of the PhD Programme in Social Sciences for Sustainability and Wellbeing (S3W – https://www.s3w.unifi.it/).
I served as Executive Guest Editor for the Special Issue “Ecological Macroeconomics: Exploring Alternative Futures” in the journal Ecological Economics, and, for the same journal, I was also Guest Editor of the Special Issue on “Behavioural Ecological Economics”.
I am the Director and organiser of the annual Summer School in Ecological Macroeconomics, which in 2026 received applications from more than 100 students from all over the world, and of the First International Conference in Ecological Macroeconomics.
I was Scientific Coordinator of two Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs), funded through competitive calls, within the EUniWell Alliance for the academic years 2024–25 and 2025–26: “Ecological Economics: Theory and Practice for a Just and Sustainable Transition in Europe and Beyond”.
Previously, I was Principal Investigator of the PRIN PNRR project “MUST4Water” and led the MIT-UNIPI MISTI Grant project “EMERITUS” in collaboration with MIT and Virginia Tech. In 2024–25, I was elected to the Board of the International Society for Ecological Economics (ISEE).
I organised the Workshop in Behavioural Ecological Economics at the University of Florence in July 2023, together with the related Summer School in Ecological Economics in Pisa. I was Vice-Chair of the Local Organising Committee for the XIV Conference of the European Society for Ecological Economics (ESEE2022), held at the University of Pisa, and I continue to co-organise the annual ESEE Summer Schools in Pisa.
In addition, I co-created the podcast “Back to the Future: Talks on Ecological Economics”, in collaboration with Sofia Belardinelli and the University of Padua, aimed at disseminating ecological economics to a wider audience through interviews and comics.
