Legenda
Dr. Bartolini is an American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) dual Board-Certified Pediatric Neurologist and Epileptologist practicing at Meyer Children’s Hospital / University of Florence, Italy.
Dr. Bartolini is an academic leader who has acquired more than 12 years of experience in clinical practice, research, administration and management in the USA before moving back to Italy. His area of expertise is the treatment of complex neurological disorders in children, with a special interest in all forms of childhood epilepsy, including rare, drug-resistant neurogenetic conditions, inflammatory disorders affecting the central nervous system, pediatric stroke and neurocritical care.
In recognition of his professional accomplishments and dedication in the field of neurology and epilepsy, Dr. Bartolini has been elected a Fellow by the American Academy of Neurology and by the American Epilepsy Society, an honor that only few doctors in Europe have received.
Before joining Meyer Children’s, Dr. Bartolini was the Director of the Pediatric Epilepsy Program at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Neurology and Neurosurgery at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, United States. Under his leadership, the program has become a referral center for the treatment of complex pediatric epilepsies in Rhode Island, Southern Massachusetts, and Eastern Connecticut. He established a multidisciplinary team, with the ability to perform cutting-edge diagnostic tests, and advanced treatments. The surgical program offered multiple options to children with drug-resistant epilepsy, including invasive EEG monitoring with stereotactic EEG, resective surgery, MRI-guided stereotactic laser ablation, and implantation of neuromodulation devices. Amongst many achievements, Dr. Bartolini’s team was the second in New England to implant a responsive neurostimulation device (RNS) in a child, who then became seizure-free without postoperative deficits.
Dr. Bartolini’s areas of research include inflammatory mechanisms and genetic features involved in pediatric epilepsy and electrophysiological features of rare genetic conditions. His research has been supported by Advance-CTR, and Children’s Miracle Network at Brown University, the American Epilepsy Society, Epilepsy Foundation of America and by the Division of Intramural Research of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS).
Dr. Bartolini serves as Editor-In-Chief of Neurology: Clinical Practice and Associate Editor of Neurology (official journals of the American Academy of Neurology), and sits on the Leadership Development Subcommittee and Publications Committee of the American Academy of Neurology.

Dr. Bartolini has a track record of funded highly competitive research grants as Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) in the United States.
During his career as a clinician-scientist, Dr. Bartolini has been involved in several clinical and translational research projects regarding epilepsy, ranging from studying viral and inflammatory mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of epilepsy to imaging characteristics of drug-resistant pediatric epilepsy and to inflammatory mechanisms involved in super-refractory status epilepticus in children. More recently, Dr. Bartolini’s research focus has been to analyze neurophysiological features of rare genetic epilepsies, and decoding gene expression in surgically resected brain specimens from children affected by Rasmussen Encephalitis, a rare and devastating form of drug-resistant epilepsy.
Dr. Bartolini’s overarching research goal is to elucidate disease mechanisms involved in the development of drug-resistant epilepsy in children, with the aim of translating these discoveries into clinical practice as potential targets for novel therapeutic approaches and ultimately to improve the quality of life of children affected by this severe condition and their families.
