Luca Pugi nasce il 07 giugno 1974 a Firenze.
Consegue La Laurea In Ingegneria Meccanica presso la omonima facoltà della Università degli Studi di Firenze nel 1999.
La laurea viene premiata dal collegio degli ingegneri ferroviari con la borsa Cesare Bianchi, (miglior tesi sperimentazione nel settore ferroviario).
Svolto il Servizio Civile viene congedato per riconosciuti meriti scientifici (L.I.S.A.A.C.).
Conclude con successo nel 2003 il proprio dottorato di ricerca (SSD Ing. Ind 13 ) presso l' Università di Bologna,
La tesi di dottorato ha per oggetto lo sviluppo di un banco HIL per il testing di sistemi WSP. Il banco viene utilizzato per sperimentazione dell'algoritmo di odometria SCMT. Il banco viene omologato UIC per la sperimentazione di sistemi WSP.
Luca Pugi cura e prende parte a larga parte delle successive attività di Update.
Il banco a distanza di più di 20 anni è ancora omologato ed in funzione (è uno dei due banchi omologati UIC a livello mondiale ed èè al momento in uso ad Italcertifer)
Diventa Ricercatore TD per la prima volta nel 2004. Ottenuta l'abilitazione nel 2014(SSD ING-IND 13), prende Servizio come professore Associato presso l'Università degli Studi di Firenze nel 2019 dove si occupa dei corsi di: Meccatronica, Trazione Stradale e Ferroviaria, Meccanica Applicata (modulo all'interno del Laboratorio di Progettazione).
Ottiene l'abilitazione per professore di prima fascia nel 2020 (V quad. selezione 2018, https://asn18.cineca.it/pubblico/miur/esito-abilitato/09%252FA2/1/5) .
Per il database Stanford/Elsevier Luca Pugi rientra dal 2019 nel 2% dei world top scientist per la categoria Engineering. In particolare il ranking più alto per il 2024 è stato 1240th su 119000 (sub category electric. engineering)

Per quanto riguarda il trasferimento tecnologico è co-fondatore di due aziende Spin-Off e co-titolare di alcuni brevetti nazionali ed internazionali.
L'attività svolta è stata oggetto di riconoscimenti ed award anche personali tra cui si ricordano quelli ottenuti dal Collegio degli Ingegneri Ferroviari Italiani(Premio Cesare Bianchi, Premio Mallegori), di IMECHE (Jf Alcock memorial) di UIC-WCRR(Best Oral Presentation at World Congress for Railway Research).
E' co-responsabile/ degli accordi internazionali con numerosi istituti di ricerca esteri (WRIGHT State University(USA),Università del Saarland (Germania), Università di Lubiana(Slovenia), Università UNILASALLE (Francia) Università Sun Yat Sen (Taywan))
I principali Interessi di ricerca riguardano la Modellazione dei Sistemi Meccanici, la Meccatronica, la Mobilità, con particolare riferimento ad applicazioni riguardanti la Dinamica, il Controllo e la Sperimentazione.
Attualmente Luca Pugi è membro della locale sezione di Meccanica Applicata, ma svolge le sue attività prevalentemento nell'ambito del laboratorio MOVING direttp dal professore Marco Pierini ed in collaborazione con diversi gruppi di ricerca afferenti oltre ai DIEF (Dipartimento di Ingegneria Industriale) al DINFO (Dipartimento i Ingnegneria dell'Informazione) al DICEA (Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile ed Ambientale). Nell'ambito della sua lunga carriera di ricerca ha partecipato a numerosi progetti di ricerca internazionali, nazionali e regionali, collaborando a vario titolo anche con importanti partner industriali.
Per il carattere specificatemente interdisciplinare delle attività svolte nel 2025 il gruppo di ricerca del prof. Luca Pugi assume nel 2025 la denominazione di MCube (Mechatronics Mobility and Modelling) , http://mcube.unifi.it/
Il gruppo coordinato dal Prof. Luca Pugi, si occupa prevalentemente di attività relative alla meccatronica, la mobilità elettrica , la modellazione dinamica di sistemi meccanici e/o multifisici e si candida per la natura interdisciplinare delle sue attività al superamento dei tradizionali limiti tra diversi settori scientifico disciplinari. "
Oltre, ovviamente, alla passione per il proprio lavoro, Luca Pugi coltiva una profonda e convinta passione per la storia dell'ingegneria e del pensiero scientifico con particolare riferimento al modo in cui questo ha influenzato, lo sviluppo del genere umano in tutti i sui campi.

Luca Pugi was born on June 7, 1974 in Florence. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the faculty of the same name at the University of Florence in 1999. He is also a member of numerous academic and scientific associations including IEEE (IEEE senior member). As far as technology transfer is concerned, he is co-founder of two Spin-Off companies and co-owner of some national and international patents. The activity carried out has been the subject of recognition and awards, including personal ones, including those obtained by the College of Italian Railway Engineers (Cesare Bianchi Award, Mallegori Award), IMECHE (Jf Alcock memorial) and UIC-WCRR (Best Oral Presentation at World Congress for Railway Research). He is co-responsible for international agreements with numerous foreign research institutes (WRIGHT State University (USA), University of Saarland (Germany), University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), UNILASALLE University (France) Sun Yat Sen University (Taywan)) His main research interests concern the Modeling of Mechanical Systems, Mechatronics, Mobility, with particular reference to applications concerning Dynamics, Control and Experimentation. Currently Luca Pugi is a member of the local section of Applied Mechanics, but he carries out his activities mainly within the MOVING laboratory directed by Professor Marco Pierini and in collaboration with various research groups belonging to the DIEF (Department of Industrial Engineering) to the DINFO (Department of Information Engineering) to the DICEA (Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering). As part of his long research career, he has participated in numerous international, national and regional research projects, collaborating in various capacities also with important industrial partners.
Due to the specifically interdisciplinary nature of the activities carried out in 2025, the research group of Prof. Luca Pugi takes the name of MCube (Mechatronics Mobility and Modelling) in 2025, http://mcube.unifi.it/ The group coordinated by Prof. Luca Pugi, mainly deals with activities related to mechatronics, electric mobility, dynamic modeling of mechanical and/or multiphysical systems and is a candidate for the interdisciplinary nature of its activities at the overcoming the traditional limits between different scientific disciplinary sectors.
