Formazione ed esperienze professionali precedenti
Mi sono laureata presso l’Università di Siena, Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia, in Storia Medievale (1994, con votazione 110/110 e lode) e sono stata borsista presso il Max Planch Institut für Geschichte di Gottingen con la Mission Historique Française in Allemagne nel 1994. Successivamente mi sono diplomata in Archivistica e Paleografia presso la Scuola dell’Archivio di Stato di Perugia (1995) e ho conseguito la qualifica di Esperto in progettagione integrata dei beni culturali (1999) a seguito del corso di formazione professionale (1998-1999) specifico organizzato dalla Regione Toscana. Nel 1995 sono stata ammessa al corso di dottorato del CESCM (Centre d' Etudes Supérieures de Civilisation Médiévale) di Poitiers, ma vi ho rinunciato perché ho vinto una borsa dottorale in Discipline Storiche presso la Scuola di Perfezionamento (equipollente al dottorato di ricerca) della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa nell’anno accademico 1995/1996 e ho conseguito il titolo dottorale nel 2000 (con votazione 70/70 e lode). Nel 2001 ho ottenuto, a seguito di una procedura di selezione, un finanziamento Progetto giovani ricercatori erogato dall’Università di Firenze per proseguire le mie ricerche dottorali, dopodiché ho goduto di una borsa di studio erogata ancora dall’Ateneo di Firenze nel 2003 e di durata semestrale per collaborare al progetto Storia dell’Università di Firenze. Nel 2003 ho vinto una borsa di studi biennale post dottorale presso il Centro di Alti Studi Religiosi di Piacenza diretto da Giovanni Filoramo (2003-2005). Presso il SAGAS dell’Università di Firenze (all’epoca Dipartimento di Studi Storici e Geografici) ho usufruito di tre assegni di ricerca (2001-2002 ; 2003-2004; 2004-2005) sui temi della storia dei santuari e dei culti nella Toscana medievale. Dal 2000 al 2004 ho collaborato con l’Ecole Française de Rome nel quadro del progetto Censimento dei santuari cristiani in Italia (sia come autore di schede relative alla Toscana, sia come revisore delle schede relative alle regioni di Puglia, Calabria, Liguria, Friuli e della provincia di Bologna) <http://www.santuaricristiani.iccd.beniculturali.it>.
Dal 2006 sono diventata ricercatrice in Storia Medievale presso l’Ateneo di Firenze. Nel 2013 ho conseguito l’abilitazione nazionale a professoressa associata in Storia Medievale e in Storia del Cristianesimo e delle Chiese. Dal 2015 al 2019 sono stata Professoressa Associata in Storia Medievale, poi in Storia del Cristianesimo e delle Chiese.

Faccio parte del Collegio dei Docenti e partecipo regolarmente all’attività didattica della Scuola di Dottorato di Studi Storici del Dipartimento SAGAS, faccio parte del Dottorato Nazionale in Studi Religiosi dove coordino il Curriculum di Cristianesimio.
Attività di ricerca
La mia attività di ricerca riguarda la storia dei movimenti religiosi; del culto dei santi; la trasmissione delle memorie agiografiche, delle identità religiose e dei testi ascetici nel contesto storico mediterraneo; la storia delle esperienze religiose con particolare attenzione alla storia delle donne; la storia della formazione delle coscienze indagata principalmente attraverso le fonti religiose nel contesto euromediterraneo anche in un'ottica comparativa; i rapporti tra religioni e scienze.

Dalla mia presa di servizio presso l’Università degli Studi di Firenze ho ricoperto incarichi in varie strutture dell’Ateneo fiorentino: nei corsi di Studio, nel Dipartimento, in Ateneo.
La mia attività di ricerca riguarda la storia dei movimenti religiosi dalle società antiche a quelle proto-moderne; la storia del culto dei santi nei loro dinamici rapporti tra il livello istituzionale e quello carismatico; la trasmissione delle memorie agiografiche, delle identità religiose e dei testi ascetici nel contesto storico mediterraneo; la storia delle esperienze religiose con particolare attenzione alla storia delle donne; la storia della formazione delle coscienze indagata principalmente attraverso le fonti religiose nel contesto euromediterraneo anche in un'ottica comparativa.

Full Professor of History of Christianity and Churches at the Department of History, Archaeology, Geography, Fine and Performing Arts (SAGAS), University of Florence. Since 2012 she has been a formal and continuing member of Italian and international research centres, including: the Research Centre of the National Museum of the Château de Pau (2012-2024); The Medici Archive Project, Florence, as a member of the Academic Staff (since 2017 - ); the LEM - Laboratoire d'Études sur les Monothéismes, CNRS, Paris, as membre associé (since 2021 - ); and the CNR-ISEM, Institute of Mediterranean European History (Cagliari-Rome-Milan), as affiliated researcher (since 2023). Education and Previous Professional Experience
She graduated in Medieval History from the University of Siena, Faculty of Arts and Philosophy (summa cum laude, 110/110 cum laude), and in the same year held a scholarship at the Max Planck Institut für Geschichte in Göttingen with the Mission Historique Française en Allemagne. She was admitted to the doctoral programme of the CESCM (Centre d’Études Supérieures de Civilisation Médiévale) in Poitiers, but renounced it after winning a scholarship in Historical Disciplines at the Scuola di Perfezionamento of the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa (equivalent to a PhD programme). She completed the doctoral degree there in 2000 (70/70 cum laude). She was awarded a two-year Postdoctoral fellowship at the Centro di Alti Studi in Scienze Religiose in Piacenza, directed by Giovanni Filoramo (2003–2005). Between 2000 and 2004 she collaborated with the École Française de Rome within the project Census of Christian Shrines in Italy. She taught History of Christianity and Churches at the University of Siena (academic years 2002-2003, 2003-2004, 2004-2005) and then Medieval History at the University of Florence (academic years 2004-2005, 2005-2006). Since November 2006 she has been a researcher at the University of Florence; Associate Professor of Medieval History from 2015 to 2019; Associate Professor of History of Christianity and Churches from 2019 to 2024; Full Professor since 2024.
Teaching Activity
Since 2006 she has taught in several degree programmes at the University of Florence and in four university Master’s programmes. She has been a member of the doctoral board of the PhD in Historical Studies (University of Florence - University of Siena) since 2007, and since 2022 she has also been a member of the National PhD in Religious Studies, where she serves as Coordinator for the field of Christianity.
Research Interests
Her research focuses on the history of religious movements from medieval to proto-modern societies; the cult of saints and the transmission of hagiographical memories, religious identities and ascetic texts in the Mediterranean context; the history of religious experience with particular attention to women’s and gender history; the formation of consciences as investigated mainly through religious sources in the Euro-Mediterranean context also comparatively; and the history of sciences and the environment as reconstructed through texts produced in religious milieus.
Her work is characterised by a cross-disciplinary approach and, whenever possible, by an intercultural perspective aimed at recovering the relationships among Christian, Jewish and Islamic contexts.
Research Leadership and Coordination - Selected Projects
2013-2015 - Historical valorisation project for Villa La Quiete (University of Florence), which led to an Open Job in Lab initiative funded by the Tuscany Region through GiovaniSì contracts. She supervised contract holders engaged in public events, communication, social media, website development and guided visits.
2015-2016 - Head of the Florence team for the international project 'Relations between Italy and the Eastern Arabian Peninsula between the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period', on behalf of the National Archives of the United Arab Emirates.
2016-2018 - Principal Investigator of the Strategic University of Florence Project 'Interior Geographies: the practice of pilgrimage among Christianity, Judaism and Islam in the Middle Ages (6th-15th century)'. The project led to an international seminar and to the volume Geografie interiori (Florence, 2021).

Member of numerous scientific committees, including the Centro di Studi sul Tardo Medioevo in San Miniato, the University Museum System of the University of Florence, the CISCuP Centre in Lucca, the ERC PRIMA project 'Manuscripts in the Age of Print', and several international conferences held between 2023 and 2026.
Responsible, on behalf of SAGAS, for scientific cooperation agreements with institutions including College of the Holy Cross (USA), Renmin University (China), the University of Seville, Vilnius University, the University of Lausanne, the University of Kyoto and the Erasmus agreement with the University of Frankfurt.
At the University of Florence she has held a wide range of institutional roles, including member of the Comitato Unico di Garanzia, member of the Presidio di Qualità di Ateneo, member of the Scientific Committee of the University Museum System, scientific representative for the inter-university network Genere e Religioni, and president of the MA programme LM-64 Intermediazione Culturale e Religiosa, which she helped establish in 2021. Since 2025 she is President of Comitato Unico di Garanzia of University of Florence.

The research projects I am currently involved in are:
1) ERC PRIMA “Manuscripts in the Age of Print”, P.I. Elena Pierazzo, University of Tours;
2) "MUDANZA. Dancing women, idolatry and rituals: visual culture and cultural history of dance during the long Middle Ages" (PID2022-140028NB-100, 2023-2026), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, at Rovira i Virgili University, Tarragona;
3) "The Tribunal of the Inquisition of Santa Croce in Florence: spaces, protagonists, organisation" (website here: https://inquisitio.hypotheses.org/), which I direct with Emanuela Ferretti
4) Director of "Religion and sciences: nuns, religious women and health knowledge in Italy (12th-16th centuries)" at the CNR ISEM.
Research topics: history of religious movements from the Ancient to Early Modern Societies; the history of the cult of saints in their dynamical relations between the institutional level and the charismatic level; the transmission of hagiographic memories, of religious identities and of ascetical texts in the Mediterranean historical context; the history of religious experiences with a special attention to the women history; the history of the formation of consciences investigated mainly through religious sources within the Euro-Mediterranean context also from a comparative perspective.
