Research lines and scientific production

• From the late 1970s to the early 90s, his research has concerned five main themes that are interlaced: 1) Benjamin’s philosophy; 2) Nietzsche and the problem of European nihilism; 3) Georg Simmel: life, form and epistemology of history; 4) the philosophy of German romanticism; 5) Kant's aesthetics and ethics. In this period, he edited works of Kant, Novalis, Nietzsche and Simmel, and wrote the following books: Walter Benjamin.
• In the 90s, he began working on the problem of consciousness, starting from the relationship between identity and alterity. About consciousness’ issue, he published the book L’ascolto della coscienza. Una ricerca filosofica (Feltrinelli, 1998), in which he investigated the relationship between the intentional and the un-intentional dimensions of consciousness.
• Since 2000, he has investigated upon different questions concerning the history and theory of aesthetics. First, he considered some of the problems he already dealt with in the period 1980-1999 by a aesthetic perspective. From this point of view, the main themes are: a) Benjamin, Adorno and contemporary aesthetics; b) the aesthetics of the early German Romanticism (with attention to the conception of time and nature); c) Kant’s Third Critique (with peculiar consideration of the aesthetic judgment). The research pertinent to the themes a) and c) saw, as a result, the publication of two books, both edited by Il Melangolo, respectively in 2002 and 2003: Il fantasma dell’opera. Benjamin, Adorno e le aporie dell’arte contemporanea, and Il passaggio estetico. Saggi kantiani.
• While from a historical-aesthetic point of view he carried on the studies he begun in the early 80s, from an aesthetic-theoretical one, he extended the research on the theme of consciousness in the direction of a theory of aesthetics. This last path achieved a first definition in the book Forme dell’estetica. In this book, he defends the thesis according to which at the center of the aesthetic question there is the core problem of the perception’s quality. In the years between 2004 and 2008, his research has mostly concerned the genesis of the aesthetic and its meta-functional nature in relation to human identity. By using the notion of expressivity of the aesthetic, he then pulled out the idea of an intrinsic relation between the genesis of the aesthetic and that of intention. At the same time, he has pursued a historical reconstructive synthesis of aesthetics that is not limited to the period in which aesthetics has been an autonomous philosophical discipline. From this research stemmed the book written with Chiara Cantelli, Storia dell’estetica occidentale. Da Omero alle neuroscienze, (Carocci 2008).
• In May 2019 he published (together with Giampiero Moretti) a new complete edition of the philosophical work of Novalis: Novalis, Scritti Filosofici, Morcelliana Brescia 2019. In October 2020 he published (with Chiara Cantelli) a New edition, entirely revised and augmented of many voices and sections, of Storia dell’estetica occidentale. Da Omero alle neuroscienze (again for the publisher Carocci, with a different ISBN compared to the 2008 edition which saw 13 reprints).

In the last years, his research concerns the project of a radical re-configuration of aesthetics and the definition of a new model of aesthetic mind. In this context he has defined a model of aesthetic mechanism, inspired by an uninterrupted dialogue with experimental studies conducted in the field of neurosciences. In this regard, his most relevant articles are: On the epigenesis of the aesthetic mind. The sense of beauty from survival to supervenience (« Rivista di Estetica », v. 54, 2013); Epigenesis and Coherence of the Aesthetic Mechanism (“Aisthesis, v. 8, 2015/1); Sur l’épigenèse de l ’esprit esthétique.

His last six books: La percezione riflessa. Una ricerca filosofica, New Edition, (Inschibboleth 2023).
