M. Ricci ha conseguito la Laurea in Chimica nel 1991 e il Dottorato di Ricerca in Chimica Fisica nel 1995 presso l'Università di Firenze. Attualmente è ricercatrice presso il Dipartimento di Chimica dell’Università di Firenze. La sua attività di ricerca verte principalmente sull’utilizzo di tecniche spettroscopiche per lo studio di proprietà chimico fisiche dei materiali. Dal 2004, i suoi interessi di ricerca si sono estesi allo studio delle proprietà fisiche e chimiche di materiali lapidei, ceramiche, pigmenti e composti organici per il patrimonio culturale mediante tecniche ottiche.

L'attività scientifica è principalmente incentrata sullo studio del comportamento spettroscopico e fotofisico di sistemi molecolari e cristallini. I principali temi di ricerca possono essere riassunti nei seguenti punti:

• Proprietà strutturali e dinamiche di sistemi molecolari e sovramolecolari in fase condensata, con particolare attenzione alla dinamica di liquidi semplici e fortemente aggregati (vetri molecolari e cristalli liquidi).
• Studio del comportamento spettroscopico e fotofisico di alcuni sistemi molecolari.
• Caratterizzazione di substrati SERS attivi.
• Spettroscopia optoacustica applicata a nanosistemi con diverse strutture.
• Studio di pigmenti inorganici, coloranti naturali e sintetici, e materiali organici comunemente usati come leganti, protettivi e consolidanti nelle opere d’arte mediante tecniche spettroscopiche. Particolare attenzione è dedicata all’evoluzione dei materiali nel tempo, ai meccanismi di degrado e all’efficacia degli interventi di restauro e conservazione.

M. Ricci took her Laurea in Chemistry in 1991 and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry in 1995 from the University of Florence. She is now a permanent research member of the Department of Chemistry of Florence University. Her scientific work focuses on the application of spectroscopic techniques to study the chemical and physical properties of materials. Since 2004, her research interests have also extended to the study of physical and chemical properties of lapideous materials, ceramics, pigments and organic compounds for cultural heritage by means of optical techniques.

Scientific activity is primarily focused on the study of the spectroscopic and photophysical behavior of molecular and crystalline systems. The main research topics can be summarized as follows:

• Structural and dynamic properties of molecular and supramolecular systems in the condensed phase, with particular attention to the dynamics of simple and highly aggregated liquids (molecular glasses and liquid crystals).
• Study of the spectroscopic and photophysical behavior of coniugated molecular systems.
• Characterization of SERS-active substrates.
• Optoacoustic spectroscopy applied to structured nanosystems
• Investigation of inorganic pigments, natural and synthetic dyes, and organic materials commonly used as binders, protective agents, and consolidants in artworks through spectroscopic techniques. Special attention is given to the study of material aging, degradation mechanisms, and the effect and effectiveness of restoration and conservation treatments.
