Research activity
-comparative analysis of European local administrative cultures, in particular through the: participation in the Udite Leadership Study, first large comparative survey on local administrative élite in Europe
-comparative analysis of European great urban systems, mainly in quantitative researches
- comparative analysis of the role of local elected officials and of the decisional process at local level, in particular promotion and coordination until 2006, of the European research “Political Leaders in European Cities. Selection, daily-life and values of local elected officials across the integrating Europe», developed in Italy with the sustain of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, the Consiglio regionale delle Autonomie Locali, and in each of the 16 other European countries involved on diversified national funds. From this survey have been published a final comparative research report, The European Mayor, Political Leaders in the Changing Context of Local Democracy, chez VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften, Wiesbaden, 2006 (eds. A.Magnier, H.Heinelt, H. Bäck), five national monographies in different European counties and around thirty articles. Acted similarly as promotor and coordinator of a second round of this research aiming at assessing the changes occurred in fundamental dimensions of recruitment and role interpretation, with a particular new focus on urban policies (The European Mayor II). To the project adhered 29 national teams. In this project, acted as general international coordinator and coordinates the subgroup “Urban agenda and planning practices”. The first book from the project has been published in 2018 by Palgrave under the title: Political Leaders in Changing Local Democracy.
-spatial planning practices analysis, in expert committees for municipal urban plans, in comparative assessments, specially under the profile of citizens’ involvement and corresponding analysis of the role of sociologists in planning (see the article published in 2013 in the collective volume Regieren at Springer V., the chapter from the data gathered in The European Mayor II in Political Leaders in Changing Local Democracy (2018) and in the contribution on the Tuscan case “Alla ricerca di regole paesaggistiche per gli ambiti urbani”.
- is more recently working on the situation of public space in the European City, the conflicts for its use, and the corresponding public debate and local policies,
