Carlo Colombo was born in Bari, Italy, in 1966. He received the "laurea" (M.S.) degree cum laude in Electronic Engineering from the University of Florence, Italy and the "dottorato di ricerca" (Ph.D.) in Robotics at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Pisa, Italy, in 1992 and 1996, respectively. In 1994 he was a visiting scientist at the Laboratory of Fundamental Informatics and Artificial Intelligence LIFIA-IMAG, Polytechnic of Grenoble, France. In 1996 he joined the Dipartimento di Elettronica per l'Automazione of the University of Brescia, Italy, as a "ricercatore" (assistant professor). Since 2002 he is an associate professor at the Dipartimento di Sistemi e Informatica, Faculty of Engineering, University of Florence. His regular teaching activities at the Faculty of Engineering of Florence include computer architectures and computer vision. He was lecturer on image processing and computer vision for the Master on Multimedia held in Florence at RAI-Radiotelevisione Italiana, on visual interaction techniques at the Master on Advanced Technologies for Interactive Communications organized by the University of Rome "Tor Vergata", and on information theory at the Master on Digital Writing organized by the University of Florence. He was also lecturer at the School of Photogrammetry, Computer Vision and Laser Scanning organized by the University of Udine, Italy. His current research activities focus on computer vision for 3D model reconstruction (with applications to advanced robotics, computer graphics, cultural heritage preservation), visual surveillance and advanced human-machine interaction (with applications to the design of systems for disabled people, domotics, and multimedia).
Prof. Colombo is the general co-chair of the 12th European Conference on Computer Vision ECCV 2012 (Florence, 7-13 October 2012). He has served recently as Doctoral Symposium co-chair of the International Conference ACM Multimedia 2010 (Florence, 25-29 October 2010), and Program Committee member for the 5th International Symposium on 3D Data Processing, Visualization and Transmission 3DPVT 2010 (Paris, May 2010), the 23rd IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition CVPR 2010 (San Francisco, June 2010), and the 10th Asian Conference on Computer Vision (Queenstown, New Zealand, November 2010). He is PC member of the 24th IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition CVPR 2011 (Colorado Springs, June 2011). He was among the local organizers of the 3rd International Symposium on Intelligent Robotic Systems SIRS'95 (Pisa, July 1995), the 9th IAPR International Conference on Image Analysis and Processing ICIAP'97 (Florence, September 1997) and the IEEE International Conference on Multimedia Computing and Systems ICMCS'99 (Florence, June 1999). His past service as a Program Committee member includes SIRS (Lisbon 1996, Stockholm 1997, Edinburgh 1998, Coimbra 1999, Reading 2000, Toulouse 2001), the International Conference on Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition and Image Processing CVPRIP (Research Triangle Park 1998, Atlantic City 2000, Durham 2002), ICIAP (Palermo 2001, Mantova 2003, Cagliari 2005, Modena 2007, Vietri sul Mare 2009), the Workshop on Natural Interaction (Florence 2004), the 2004 IEEE International Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing (Siena 2004), the International Conference on Computer Vision Systems ICVS (Graz 2003, New York 2005), the International Conference on Multimedia and Expo ICME (Taipei 2004, Amsterdam 2005), the British Machine Vision Conference BMVC (Oxford 2005), the 4th International Symposium on 3D Data Processing, Visualization, and Transmission 3DPVT 2008 (Atlanta 2008) and the 2nd International IEEE workshop on 3D Representation for Recognition (3dRR09) held in conjuction with the Twelfth International Conference on Computer Vision ICCV 2009, Kyoto, Japan. He also was Tutorial Chair (Europe) at ICMCS'98 (Austin) and Exhibit and Demonstration Chair at ICMCS'99 (Florence). Prof. Colombo serves as reviewer for the most important journals in the area of visual information technology. Since January 2009 Prof. Colombo is Area Editor of CVIU: the Computer Vision and Image Understanding Journal (Elsevier). Since 2001 he has been member of the Editorial Board of the international journal Robotics and Autonomous Systems (Elsevier), for which he also co-edited a special issue in March 1997. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Multimedia (Academic Publisher). From 1996 to 2000 he has been secretary and treasurer of the Italian Chapter of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR).
