Principali interessi scientifici

L'attività scientifica del Prof Riccardo Avanzinelli è incentrata sulle applicazioni della geochimica ed in particolare della geochimica isotopica a diverse problematiche inerenti alle Scienze della Terra, principalmente nel campo petrologico, vulcanologico, cosmochimico e ambientale attraverso la determinazione della composizione mineralogica e geochimica dei prodotti e soprattutto attraverso l’utilizzo di sistematiche isotopiche tradizionali (Sr, Nd, Pb) e non tradizionali (isotopi dell’Uranio Mo, ID-HFSE, isotopi del Cromo). Alcune delle problematiche trattate sono i) la relazione tra geodinamica e magmatismo; ii) i meccanismi di fusione del mantello terrestre; iii) il riciclaggio di materiale crostale nel mantello terrestre; iv) lo studio dei processi di evoluzione dei magmi con particolare attenzione alla stima dei tempi di residenza in camere magmatiche; v) la tracciabilitá agro-alimentare tramite misura isotopica di prodotti quali il vino; vi) la tracciabilità dell’inquinamento tramite l’analisi isotopica di sedimenti, particolato fluviale sospeso e acque; vii) datazioni U-Pb su calcite syn-cinematica sviluppata su piani di faglia; viii) Caratterizzazione di materiale extraterrestre per la definizione dei processi di genesi ed evoluzione planetaria; ix) Caratterizzazione mineralogica, geochimica ed isotopica di manteriale archeologico per la definizione della provenienza delle materie prime.

Main field of research interest

The scientific activity of Prof Riccardo Avanzinelli is focused on the applications of geochemistry and in particular of isotopic geochemistry to various fields of Earth Sciences, mainly in the petrological, volcanological, cosmochemical and environmental fields. The research is based on the determination of the mineralogical and geochemical composition of the products and above all through the use of traditional (Sr, Nd, Pb) and non-traditional (Uranium Mo isotopes, ID-HFSE, isotope of Chromium

Some of the topics tackled are: i) the link between geodynamics and magmatism in different settings; ii) mechanism and timescale of mantle melting; iii) timescale and mechanism of mass transfer in subduction zone iv) magma chamber processes mainly focused on constraining the timescales of the processes involved and on residence times of magma in shallow reservoir; v) isotopic traceability of wine; vi) definition of the pollution sources through geochemical and isotopic analyses; viii) U-Pb dating of syn-kinematic calcite developed on fault planes; viii) geochemistry of meteoritic material for the study of the petrological evolution of planetary bodies, ix) application of geochemical and isotopic tracers to investigate the provenance of archaeological artifacts.

Most of these lines of research uses trace elements contents and isotope ratios (Sr-Nd-Pb and U-series disequilibria, non-traditional isotope systems, high precision HFSE ) to constrain magmatic and petrological processes and/or to trace the provenance of natural or anthropic sources with the Earth . In addition, I am currently developing new lines of research focused on the geochemical, mineral chemical and isotopic characterisation of extra-terrestrial material (i.e., meteorites)..
