Nato a Firenze il 04/03/1977, ha ottenuto il Dottorato di Ricerca in Fisica nel 2005 con una tesi di Fisica Atomica sui primi studi sperimentali di condensati di Bose-Einstein in reticoli ottici. Dal 2005 al 2007 è stato ricercatore post-doc presso il LENS European Laboratory for Nonlinear Spectroscopy. Dal 2007 al 2014 è stato Ricercatore a tempo indeterminato, poi dal 2014 Professore Associato presso il Dipartimento di Fisica e Astronomia dell'Università degli Studi di Firenze.
Nella sua attività di ricerca, prevalentemente di carattere sperimentale nel campo della Fisica atomica, ottica e molecolare, si è occupato dei seguenti argomenti: spettroscopia ad alta precisione, raffreddamento e intrappolamento laser, gas quantistici ultrafreddi, sviluppo di tecnologie quantistiche con sistemi atomici, simulazione quantistica con atomi in reticoli ottici, sistemi atomici disordinati, sviluppo di strumentazione laser, ottica nonlineare. E' alla guida di un gruppo di ricerca sperimentale attivo nello sviluppo di simulatori quantistici con atomi a due elettroni, combinando lo studio di problemi di fisica many-body con tecniche metrologiche avanzate di controllo quantistico.
E' autore di >60 pubblicazioni su riviste e libri a diffusione internazionale, 19 delle quali su riviste ad alto impact factor (Science, Nature, Nature Phys., Nat. Comm., Phys. Rev. Lett., Phys. Rev. X) e autore del libro “Atomic physics: precise measurements and ultracold matter” (Oxford, 2013). I suoi lavori scientifici hanno ricevuto più di 6000 citazioni e il suo h-index è 31 (fonte: Google Scholar 2020). E' stato invited speaker a >70 conferenze internazionali e Principal Investigator di numerosi progetti nazionali e internazionali (finanziati da EU, MIUR, MAE, INFN, IIT). Nel 2015 ha vinto un Consolidator Grant dell'European Research Council (ERC) per lo studio di stati topologici della materia con sistemi sintetici ultrafreddi.

B) ATTIVITA' DI RICERCA E RISULTATI PRINCIPALI
Ricerca sperimentale nel campo della fisica atomica e dell'ottica, in particolare nei settori: spettroscopia atomica di precisione, raffreddamento laser, condensazione di Bose-Einstein, gas di Fermi ultrafreddi, manipolazione di gas quantistici con luce laser, reticoli ottici, sistemi atomici disordinati, simulazione quantistica, informazione quantistica, sviluppo di strumentazione laser, ottica nonlineare. Si riportano qui di seguito alcuni dei risultati più significativi di questa ricerca:
2000-2001: SPETTROSCOPIA ATOMICA DI PRECISIONE. Spettroscopia laser su 4He metastabile: misura della separazione di struttura fine dei livelli 2 3PJ con una precisione di 10-8 per test di elettrodinamica quantistica e la determinazione spettroscopica della costante di struttura fine.
2002-2005: CONDENSATI DI BOSE-EINSTEIN IN RETICOLI OTTICI. Primi studi sperimentali di condensati atomici di Bose-Einstein (BEC) in reticoli ottici, ovvero “cristalli di luce” creati dall'interferenza di fasci laser contropropaganti: studio di eccitazioni collettive e dinamiche di trasporto (PRL 2003a); sviluppo di tecniche per spettroscopia di banda e controllo della dispersione (PRL 2003b); prima osservazione di un effetto di instabilità dinamica indotta dal reticolo che porta alla rottura di superfluidità (NJP 2003, PRL 2004).
2005-2008: UN NUOVO CAMPO DI RICERCA: SISTEMI ATOMICI DISORDINATI. Apertura del nuovo campo di ricerca dei sistemi atomici disordinati: prima osservazione di BEC in potenziali disordinati creati con speckles ottiche (PRL 2005a) e con reticoli ottici quasiperiodici (PRL 2007); primi studi di trasporto in potenziali disordinati (PRL 2005b); prima dimostrazione della localizzazione di Anderson per onde di materia (NATURE 2008); prima osservazione di una fase isolante disordinata in regime di Bose glass (PRL 2007, PRL 2008).
2006-2015: SISTEMI BOSONICI ULTRAFREDDI FORTEMENTE INTERAGENTI. Studio di sistemi bosonici fortemente interagenti a ridotta dimensionalità e in reticoli ottici multidimensionali: prima dimostrazione di tecniche sperimentali basate su scattering di luce per lo studio di fasi isolanti di Mott (PRL 2009, PRL 2012); prima misura quantitativa di entanglement in un sistema a molti corpi di bosoni alla transizione superfluido-Mott (NATURE COMM. 2012); studio di bosoni unidimensionali fortemente interagenti (PRA 2011, PRA 2015).
dal 2010: SISTEMI FERMIONICI ULTRAFREDDI E STATI ESOTICI DELLA MATERIA. Creazione di un nuovo laboratorio e di un nuovo gruppo di ricerca per lo studio di gas fermionici di 173Yb per esperimenti di simulazione quantistica: studio di fermioni a molte componenti con simmetria di interazione SU(N) e prima evidenza dell’effetto di bosonizzazione previsto da C. N. Yang (NATURE PHYS. 2014); prima osservazione di un nuovo meccanismo di scambio di spin in sistemi di fermioni a due orbitali elettronici (PRL 2014); prima osservazione di una risonanza di Feshbach orbitale in atomi di 173Yb (PRL 2015) e manipolazione controllata di molecole orbitali (PRX 2019); prima realizzazione di una “dimensione sintetica” e prima dimostrazioni di correnti chirali di bordo in sistemi atomici topologici con campi di gauge (SCIENCE 2015, PRL 2016).
dal 2010: SVILUPPO DI SORGENTI LASER METROLOGICHE E SPETTROSCOPIA DI PRECISIONE. Sviluppo di nuovi sistemi per la generazione di radiazione coerente attraverso processi di ottica nonlineare e realizzazione di laser ultrastabili di livello metrologico.
dal 2014: SPETTROSCOPIA LASER DI PRECISIONE E METROLOGIA OTTICA CON ATOMI A DUE ELETTRONI: prima misura di frequenza assoluta della transizione di orologio in 173Yb con una precisione di 10-15 attraverso disseminazione remota di frequenza mediante collegamento in fibra ottica (OPT. EXP. 2016).

Nei progetti integrati di larga scala SIQS ed AQUTE, finanziati dal 7° programma quadro dell'Unione Europea nell'ambito delle FET “Future and Emerging Technologies”, L. F. ha rappresentato l'attività sperimentale italiana nel campo delle tecnologie quantistiche e della simulazione quantistica con sistemi atomici. Il progetto ENCORE è stato finanziato dall'Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia come “Project Seed” per l'avvio di piattaforme innovative di ricerca nell'ambito dell'informatica quantistica. Nell’ambito delle iniziative europee collegate alla QUANTUM FLAGSHIP, è responsabile dell’unità di ricerca italiana per il progetto QUANTERA QTFLAG.
L. F. ha anche esperienza come coordinatore di network di ricerca. Il progetto PRIN AQUASIM (con INRIM di Torino e Università “La Sapienza” di Roma), di cui L. F. è coordinatore nazionale, è mirato alla realizzazione di simulatori quantistici e misure metrologiche accurate in sistemi di atomi freddi e in fotonica integrata. Il progetto INFN FISH (con il TIFPA di Trento), di cui L. F. è coordinatore nazionale, ha come obiettivo l’utilizzo di gas quantistici ultrafreddi per la simulazione quantistica di aspetti di fisica delle alte energie.
Nel 2016 L. F. è stato premiato con un Consolidator Grant dell’European Research Council (ERC) per lo studio di nuovi simulatori quantistici attraverso il controllo della topologia e delle simmetrie in sistemi di atomi fermionici a due elettroni.

Born in Florence (Italy) on 04/03/1977, he received his PhD in Physics in 2005 for early experimental studies of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices. From 2005 to 2007 he was a post-doc at LENS European Laboratory for Nonlinear Spectroscopy. Experimental research in atomic physics and optics, in particular in the fields: precision atomic spectroscopy, laser cooling and trapping, Bose-Einstein condensation, ultracold Fermi gases, laser manipulation of quantum gases, optical lattices, disordered atomic systems, quantum simulation, quantum information, quantum computation, development of laser instrumentation, nonlinear optics. Below we mention some of the main research achievements:
2000-2001: Precision atomic spectroscopy. Precision laser spectroscopy of metastable 4He: measurement of the 23PJ fine-structure separation with 10-8 uncertainty for tests of quantum electrodynamics and for the spectroscopic determination of the fine structure constant.
2002-2005: Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices. Pioneering experimental studies of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in optical lattices, i.e. “crystals of light” created by the interference of counterpropagating laser beams: first studies of collective excitations and transport dynamics (PRL 2003a); development of new techniques for band spectroscopy and dispersion control (PRL 2003b); first observation of a dynamical instability effect causing the breakdown of superfluidity in the lattice (NJP 2003, PRL 2004).
2005-2008: A new research field: Disordered atomic systems. Opening of the research field of disordered atomic systems: first observations of BECs in disordered potentials created with optical speckles (PRL 2005a) and with quasiperiodic optical lattices (PRL 2007); first studies of atomic transport in disordered optical potentials (PRL 2005b); first demonstration of Anderson localization of matter waves (NATURE 2008); first observation of a disordered insulating phase in the Bose glass regime (PRL 2007, PRL 2008).

Study of strongly interacting ultracold bosons in multi-dimensional optical lattices and in low dimensions: first demonstration of a new method based on light scattering for the study of atomic Mott insulators (PRL 2009, PRL 2012); first quantitative measurement of quantum entanglement in many-body systems of bosons at the superfluid-Mott transition (NATURE COMM. 2012); first spectroscopic studies of ultracold one-dimensional bosons (PRA 2011, PRA 2015).
since 2010: Ultracold fermionic systems and exotic states of matter. Starting of a new research group and a new laboratory for the study of 173Yb Fermi gases for quantum simulation experiments: study of multicomponent fermions with SU(N) interaction symmetry and first evidence of the high-spin bosonization effect predicted by C. N. Yang (NATURE PHYS. 2014); first observation of a new spin-exchange mechanism between fermions in different electronic orbitals (PRL 2014); first demonstration of a an orbital Feshbach resonance in 173Yb (PRL 2015) and production of orbital molecules (PRX 2019); first realization of a “synthetic dimension” and demonstration of chiral edge currents in topological atomic systems with gauge fields (SCIENCE 2015, PRL 2016).
since 2010: Development of metrological laser sources and high-precision spectroscopy. Development of new systems for the generation of coherent radiation via nonlinear optics processes and construction of ultrastable metrological lasers.
since 2014: Precision laser spectroscopy and optical metrology with two-electron atoms. Precision laser spectroscopy of ultracold two-electron atoms: first absolute frequency measurement of the 173Yb clock transition with 10-15 uncertainty by remote frequency comparisons via an optical fiber link (OPT. EXP. 2016).
since 2017: Elaboration of experimental methods for quantum simulation of topological states of matter and quantum properties of many-body systems: proposal of a new physical system for the observation of Majorana excitations (PRL 2017); first proposal of an experimental scheme for the realization of Weyl semimetals (PRB 2018); development of a protocol for the measurement of the entanglement spectrum in many-body systems (PRR 2021).
since 2020: Establishment of a new laboratory and direction of a new research group for optical trapping of single strontium atoms in programmable arrays of optical tweezers for realization of quantum coprocessors based on Rydberg atoms, quantum simulation of spin models (Ising and XY) in variable geometries, study of entanglement in many-body systems.
since 2023: Establishment of a new laboratory for the realization of programmable quantum computers based on ytterbium atoms trapped in arrays of optical tweezers.

In the large-scale integrated projects SIQS and AQUTE, funded by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union for the FET “Future and Emerging Technologies” initiative, L. F. represented the Italian experimental activity in the field of quantum technologies and quantum simulation with atomic systems. The ENCORE project was funded by the Italian Institute of Technology as “Project Seed” for the start-up of new research platforms for quantum information processing. L. F. is involved in the scientific activities of the EU QUANTUM FLAGSHIP initiative as the PI of the Italian research unit for the QUANTERA QTFLAG project.
L. F. has a strong experience in the scientific management of research networks. The national project PRIN AQUASIM (with INRIM, Turin, and University “La Sapienza”, Rome), which is coordinated by L. F. at a national level, is aimed at the realization of quantum simulators and accurate metrological measurements in both atomic systems and integrated photonics. The INFN project FISH (with TIFPA, Trento), which is coordinated by L. F. at a national level, is aimed at the design of new atomic quantum simulators for topics of high-energy physics.
In 2016 L. F. was awarded with a 1595 k€ Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) for the realization of new quantum simulators based on the control of topology and symmetries in synthetic fermionic systems of two-electron atoms.
