Giulio Vannini is Associate Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Florence, Department of Literature and Philosophy. Within the same Department, he serves as President of the University Master’s programme in Classical Philology, Literature and History of Classical Antiquity, Coordinator of the Section “Classics, Medieval and Renaissance Studies”, member of the Department Committee (“Giunta”), and member of the research group Testi e forme della tradizione. He is also a member of the Scientific Board of the PhD in Classics and Archaeology (Universities of Pisa, Florence, and Siena), and of the Management Committee of the Istituto Papirologico “Girolamo Vitelli”. He is Principal Investigator of the PRIN 2022 project Petronius and Apuleius: New Critical Editions and Related Studies (Universities of Florence, Bari, Cagliari, and Genoa).
He previously held the position of Associate Professor of Latin Language and Literature at the University for Foreigners of Perugia, where he was a member of the Scientific Board of the PhD in Literature, Library Sciences, Linguistics and International Communication, and President of the “Presidio di Ateneo per la Qualità della Didattica e della Ricerca”.
Vannini studied Latin Literature at the University of Florence, where he graduated in 2003. He obtained his PhD (Perfezionamento) in Classical Philology, Linguistics and History at the Scuola Normale Superiore in 2006, where he was awarded the “Giorgio Pasquali” scholarship. He subsequently held a research grant at the University of Florence. From 2010 to 2012 he taught Latin Language as an adjunct professor at the University for Foreigners of Perugia, where he was appointed Researcher in July 2012. From 2012 to 2014 he was a Research Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the Institut für Klassische Philologie, Humboldt University of Berlin. In 2018 he obtained the National Scientific Qualifications (ASN) as Full Professor of Classical and Late Antique Philology and of Latin Language and Literature. He has taught courses in Latin language and literature and conducted doctoral seminars for PhD candidates. Since 2015 he has also lectured on Classical literature and its transmission at the University of Pula (Croatia).
His research focuses on literary interpretation, textual criticism, and the transmission of classical texts. He has specialised in Latin prose of the first century AD, with particular emphasis on Latin narrative. His publications include studies on Petronius, Seneca’s Apokolokyntosis, and the Historia Apollonii regis Tyri, as well as contributions on individual authors (Catullus, Propertius, Seneca the Younger, Curtius Rufus, Pliny the Younger, Apuleius), and on the transmission and reception of classical literature in the medieval and modern periods. He has presented widely on these topics at national and international conferences, both as speaker and organiser.
He is the author of a comprehensive critical survey of Petronian studies over a thirty-year period (Petronius 1975–2005: bilancio critico e nuove proposte), published as a monographic volume in Lustrum (Göttingen: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, 2007). He has produced a critical edition with detailed commentary of the sea voyage episode of Petronius, published in the series “Beiträge zur Altertumskunde” (Berlin–New York: De Gruyter, 2010). He also edited Seneca’s Apokolokyntosiswith introduction, Italian translation, and commentary (Milan: Mondadori, 2008). Among his works are new annotated translations of Pliny the Younger (50 lettere; Panegirico a Traiano, Milan: Mondadori, 2019) and a critical edition with extensive commentary of the Historia Apollonii regis Tyri for the Lorenzo Valla series “Scrittori Greci e Latini” (Milan: Mondadori, 2018). He is currently preparing a new critical edition of Petronius’ Satyrica for the Oxford Classical Texts series.
He has participated in, and continues to contribute to, several research projects, including PRIN grants funded by the Italian Ministry and a PRTLI (Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions 4) funded by the Irish Government.
He is a Fellow of the Fondazione Lorenzo Valla. He serves on the editorial or scientific boards of Materiali e Discussioni per l’analisi dei testi classici, Ancient Narrative, Erat olim: nuovi materiali e contributi per lo studio della narrativa greco-latina, and Rivista di Studi Pliniani. He acts as peer reviewer for several national and international research institutions, leading journals, and major scholarly series in the field of Classical Studies.
