Maturità classica nel 1979. Nell'anno accademico 1984-1985 ha ottenuto la laurea in Lettere con il massimo punteggio cum laude, con una tesi in Storia Romana (relatore prof. Guido Clemente, correlatori A. La Penna, A. Marcone). Dopo il servizio militare (1986-1987), ha ottenuto nel 1988 l’ammissione al Dottorato di Ricerca, IV ciclo, e il titolo di Dottore di Ricerca in "Storia politica e culturale dell’antichità classica" (tesi difesa a Roma nel giugno 1992, presidente di commissione Prof. A. Giardina). Come dottorando ha svolto attività didattica di supporto, come cultore della materia, per la cattedra di Storia Romana (prof. Clemente) presso l'allora Dipartimento di Scienze dell’Antichità “G. Pasquali” della Facoltà di Lettere dell’Università di Firenze. Fra il 1993 e il 1995 è stato borsista Post-Dottorato presso l’Università di Torino, sotto il tutorato della Prof. Lellia Cracco Ruggini. Nel 1995 è risultato vincitore del concorso per Ricercatore in Storia Romana presso l’Università di Firenze prendendo servizio nel mese di luglio dello stesso anno (conferma in ruolo 1998). Nel 2002 ha ottenuto l’idoneità come professore associato in Storia Romana (SSD L-ANT/03), a seguito di valutazione comparativa presso l’Università di Foggia (Presidente di Commissione Prof. M. Durante questi anni ha svolto regolare attività didattica prevista, partecipando a tutte le attività istituzionali e a tutte le commissioni ufficiali di varia natura alle quali è stato nominato, prima della facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia, e poi negli ultimi anni dei due dipartimenti (Samerl e ora Dilef, Scuola di Studi Umanistici e della Formazione) dei quali è stato membro. E' stato correlatore e relatore di numerosi tesi di laurea di vecchio e nuovo ordinamento. Ha svolto lezioni per dottorati e master, invitatovi da altre università italiane (cfr. punto 5). E' stato tutor e relatore nell'ambito del dottorato fiorentino e di dottorati di altre università, italiane ed estere. Dal 2014 al 2020, membro della Giunta del Dipartimento di Lettere e Filosofia (DILEF). Dal 2017 al 2020, coordinatore della Sezione "Antichità, Medioevo e Rinascimento" dello stesso DILEF. È, dal momento della sua istituzione, membro del Collegio dei Docenti del "Dottorato in Studi Storici" (DSS, Università di Firenze e Siena). E' docente titolare dei corsi di Epigrafia Latina presso la Scuola di Specializzazione in Archeologia con sede a Firenze. Aurelio Simmaco • Opera di Flavio Magno Aurelio Cassiodoro Senatore e storia dell'Italia ostrogota - Cultura antiquaria e epigrafia tra Sei e Settecento 3) INCARICHI ISTITUZIONALI, DIREZIONE O COORDINAMENTO DI PROGETTI Nel triennio 2005-2007 ha svolto la funzione di segretario della CUSGR (Consulta Universitaria Italiana per la Storia Greca e Romana), incarico poi prorogato per una parte del 2008. Ha coordinato insieme ai Proff. Andrea Giardina (Direttore del progetto) e Ignazio Tantillo un lavoro di équipe di edizione italiana, con traduzione e commento storico delle Variae di Cassiodoro, e nel 2020 ormai in via di ultimazione ; tale iniziativa è stata patrocinata e sostenuta finanziariamente in prima istanza dall'Istituto Italiano di Storia Antica e dal MIUR. Dal 2010 dirige nell'ambito del progetto EAGLE-EDR (di recente anche finanziato in Europeana) il gruppo di ricerca che si occupa della documentazione dell'Etruria e di parte dell'Aemilia, che ha ottenuto un finanziamento PRIN per il triennio febbraio 2013-febbraio 2016. Dal 2019 è coordinatore nazionale del progetto EDR, insieme ai proff. Giuseppe Camodeca e Silvia Orlandi. Ha partecipato a progetti internazionali (cfr. punto 6). E’ stato per alcuni anni promotore e organizzatore insieme con I. Tantillo (Università di Cassino ora Napoli “l’Orientale”) e P. Porena (Università di Chieti-Pescara, dal 1 gennaio 2015 Università di RomaTre) dei “Seminari di storia tardoantica”, svoltisi in prevalenza a Firenze. Nel maggio-giugno 2016 è stato Enseignant invité dall'università di Paris 8 St Denis (invitanti: Claudia Moatti, Catherine Saliou), tenendo conferenze anche a Paris Ouest-Nanterre e all'Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes. Ha preso parte come "teacher" a una iniziativa didattica finanziata da The Cluster of Excellence “Religion and Politics in Pre-Modern and Modern Cultures” presso la Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster su invito del Prof. Dr. Johannes Hahn (maggio 2009). Nel settembre 2011 si è recato negli USA tenendo come visiting scholar due conferenze e due seminari presso le seguenti istituzioni: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Duke University at Durham NC; University of Colorado at Boulder. Ha attivato per l’ateneo di afferenza accordi Erasmus e partneriati con università straniere (Muenster, Santander, ecc. cf. oltre). Nel gennaio 2024 ha fatto parte del collegio docenti del Cedant-IUSS (Pavia), svolgendo attività didattica nell'ambito del corso, per borsisti selezionati, "Le imposte a Roma fra città e impero". Nel marzo 2020 ha tenuto seminari come "Visiting Professor (Invito Breve)” alla Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. Ha diretto numerosi progetti di ateneo (ex 60%). E' stato responsabile del progetto di ricerca dell’unità locale con sede amministrativa a Firenze per il programma PRIN 2006, nell’ambito del programma nazionale diretto dal Prof. Elio Lo Cascio, e per il PRIN 2010-2011 (= 2013-2015), nell'ambito del programma nazionale diretto dal Prof. Gianfranco Paci. Ha partecipato al progetto di ricerca finanziato dall'università di Buenos Aires, sotto al direzione del prof. Hugo Zurutuza: Proyect UBACYT FL 66. Fa parte del Proyecto del Plan Nacional I+D+i, durata 2021-2024, de la Agencia Estatal de Investigación (Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación). intitolato "Piedad imperial y legislacion bajo los sucesores de Teodosio I (395-455): estrategias de legitimacion, exclusion, disuasion, y convivencia en las dos partes del Imperio", diretto dalla prof.ra Victoria Escribano Pano. Dal gennaio 2021 fa parte del gruppo di ricerca coordinato da C. Ando per una nuova edizione dei Roman Statutes editi da M. Crawford (1996): New Roman Statutes. Con riferimento alla sfera delle sue competenze antichistiche, ha svolto attività di traduttore, supervisore di traduzioni, consulenze editoriali, autore di voci per dizionario, libri o parti di libro di carattere divulgativo e di manuali per le scuole secondarie superiori (cfr. elenco pubblicazioni). E' stato ed è membro di varie Associazioni di studi legati alle sue attività docenti e di ricerca. E' stato nominato dalla Commissione Europea a svolgere funzione di "Evaluator" per un progetto di ricerca da finanziare (VI Framework Program, 2005) e nel 2015 dall'ANEP (National Agency Scientific Evaluation)m per un programma Conex. Ha svolto negli anni 2016-2018 su richiesta della Presidenza dell'Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes attività di relatore per valutare una candidatura di un Directeur d'Etudes per l'ammissione alla "classe exceptionelle" interna all'Ecole. After having carried out his military service (1986-1987), he attended to his PhD (IV cycle, 1988-1991) and then received his PhD in Ancient History (the Italian Academic title being “Dottore di Ricerca”, thesis defended in Rome in June 1992, chairman Prof. A. Giardina). Since 1989 he carried on an intense assistantship activity nearby the chair of Roman History (Prof. G. Clemente), Florence University. Between 1993 and 1995, under the tutorship of Prof. Lellia Cracco Ruggini, he obtained a postdoctoral rewarded scholarship in Philology and History, at Turin University (1993-1995). In 1995 he obtained a permanent tenure track as a Lecturer (Ricercatore), in Roman History, Florence University, beginning his official teaching activity. From 1 to 31 May 2002 (inviting teacher: Prof. John Scheid ), where he held the planned series of conferences on Late Antiquity’s topics. In 2004, he obtained the chair, as a tenure track/role, of Associate Professor in Roman History (Florence University). In 2012 he obtained the Qualification (Abilitazione) as Full Professsor (Professore Ordinario) in Ancient History (Roman History) in the National Selection (ASN). In 2015 he got the chair of Full Professor for SSD L/ANT-03 Roman History, at the University of Florence. In 2016 he was Enseignant Invité at the University of Paris 8 St Denis (inviting teachers C. Moatti, C. Saliou) from 20th May until 20th June; he held the planned series of conferences on Late Antiquity’s topics at Paris 8; EPHE; Paris Ouest Nanterre. In addition to the official courses of Roman History held from 1995-1996, from 2000-2001 he taught Latin Epigraphy, also at the University of Florence, and then History of Late Antiquity. During these years he carried out regular scheduled teaching activities, participating in all the institutional activities and all the official commissions of various kinds to which he was appointed, first of the Faculty of Humanities (Lettere e Filosofia), and then of the two departments (SAMERL and now DILEF-Dipartimento di Lettere e Filosofia, School of Humanistic Studies and Education) of which he was a member. He has been co-rapporteur and supervisor of numerous degree and PhD theses. He has lectured for doctorates and masters, invited by Italian and foreign universities (see point 5). He is, since its establishment, a member of the Scientific Board of the "Doctorate in Historical Studies" (DSS, Universities of Florence and Siena). He teaches courses in Latin Epigraphy at the Scuola di Specializzazione in Archeologia in Florence. He is among the official university delegates for the university prison hub (Polo Universitario Penitenziario). He has been appointed for the three-year period 2021-2023 as a member of the Steering and Self-Evaluation Committee of the Department of Humanities (DILEF). He has participated as president or as a commission member in numerous examinations and comparative evaluations of different levels, from research doctorates (also abroad) to competitions for full professor 2) MAIN AREAS AND TOPICS OF STUDY AND RESEARCH ( About 170 papers, articles, books and reviews, at the beginning of 2024) Cecconi’s research interests center especially (but not only) on administrative, social, and religious history of the Roman Empire and above all on Late Antiquity and on History of Roman Italy and Roman and Christian Etruria. Aurelius Symmachus; - Work of Fl.Magnus Aurelius Cassiodorus Senator; - Germanic Kingdoms in Late Antique and Early Medieval Europe (with special reference to the history of Ostrogothic Italy) - Schooling and education in Late Antiquity - Paganism in the age of barbarian migrations, 5th-7th centuries - Antiquarian culture and epigraphy between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries 3) INSTITUTIONAL CHARGES, DIRECTION OR COORDINATION OF PROJECTS In the three-year period 2005-2007 he was secretary of the CUSGR (Italian University Council for Greek and Roman History), a position which was extended for part of 2008. Together with Prof. A. Giardina (Project Director) and Prof. Ignazio Tantillo, he coordinated a team work on the Italian edition, with translation and historical commentary, of the Variae of Cassiodorus, now nearing completion in 2022; this initiative was sponsored and financially supported in the first instance by the Italian Institute of Ancient History, SUM and the MIUR. Since 2010 he has been directing, within the EAGLE-EDR project (also funded in Europeana), the research group dealing with the documentation of Etruria and part of Aemilia, which obtained a PRIN funding for the three-year period February 2013-February 2016. Since 2018, he has been the delegate of the Dean of then University of Florence for the School of Humanities and Education for the PUP (Polo Universitario Penitenziario that is Students who live and work in prison) Since 2019 he has been national coordinator of the EDR project, together with Professors Giuseppe Camodeca and Silvia Orlandi. He took part as a teacher in an educational initiative funded by The Cluster of Excellence "Religion and Politics in Pre-Modern and Modern Cultures" at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster at the invitation of Prof. Dr. Johannes Hahn (May 2009). He has been invited or appointed to hold, in Italy and abroad, further lectures, seminars, lessons for PhDs, masters, conferences for scientific congresses, Erasmus-Socrates exchanges, teacher training for Italian schools (SSIS and TFA). He has taught courses on Roman history for the University for the Free Age in Florence. From 13 to 31 January 2014 he was a member of the teaching board of the Cedant-IUSS (Pavia), teaching in the course for selected scholarship holders "Diocletian and the legal frontier of the empire". In March 2020, he was 'Short Visiting Professor' (Invito Breve) at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. He has been a member of commissions for comparative evaluations of research grants, PhDs, and tenured professorship and research posts in Roman history or related fields. He was president of the selection committee for the competition for admission to the PhD School in "Prehistory and Protohistory, History and Archaeology of the Ancient World", for the University of Siena, in September 2010. He has directed numerous Florence university projects (ex 60%). He was responsible for the research project of the local unit with administrative headquarters in Florence for the PRIN 2006 programme, within the national programme directed by Prof. Elio Lo Cascio, and for the PRIN 2010-2011 (= 2013-2015), within the national programme directed by Prof. Gianfranco Paci; now he is part of the SNS Pisa unit for a financed PRIN 2017 on “Ruling in Hard Times. Patterns of power in Carolingian Italy” (national coordinator Prof. Albertoni, local coord. Prof. Fabrizio Oppedisano). Participated in the research project funded by the University of Buenos Aires, under the direction of Prof. Hugo Zurutuza: Proyect UBACYT FL 66. He is participating in the research project: Proyecto del Plan Nacional I+D+i, 2021-2024 de la Agencia Estatal de Investigación (Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación): "Piedad imperial y legislacion bajo los sucesores de Teodosio I (395-455): estrategias de legitimacion, exclusion, disuasion, y convivencia en las dos partes del Imperio", directed by Victoria Escribano Pano. From January 2021 he is a member of the research group directed by Clifford Ando: New Roman Statutes, 2021-2025. In the area of his antiquities expertise, he has worked as a translator, translation supervisor, editorial consultant, author of dictionary entries, books or book parts for a wide audience, and textbooks for upper secondary schools (see list of publications). He has been and is a member of various Associations of Studies related to his teaching and research activities. He was appointed by the European Commission to act as Evaluator for a research project to be funded (VI Framework Program, 2005) and in 2015 by ANEP (National Agency Scientific Evaluation)m for a Conex programme. In the years 2016-2018, at the request of the Presidency of the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, he acted as a rapporteur to evaluate an application of a Directeur d'Etudes for admission to the "classe exceptionelle" within the same Ecole. He has been referee for various published books and papers for the following journals: Archeologia Medievale, Comitato Classici Lincei, Latomus, Incontri Triestini di Filologia Classica.
