Pietro PALA

Biografia

Pietro Pala si è laureato con lode nel 1994 in Ingegneria Elettronica presso l’Università degli Studi di Firenze dove ha conseguito nel 1998 il Dottorato di Ricerca in Ingegneria Informatica e delle Telecomunicazioni. Dal 2018 è professore ordinario in servizio presso il Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione dell’Università di Firenze. E' docente di Basi di Dati per il CdL in Ingegneria Informatica, Image and Video Analysis per il CdL magistrale in Ingegneria Informatica, Geometric Learning per il CdL magistrale in Intelligenza Artificiale, Sistemi di Elaborazione delle Informazioni per il CdL in Tecniche di Radiologia Medica per Immagini e Radioterapia.
E’ membro del Collegio dei Docenti del Dottorato in Smart Computing (promosso congiuntamente dalle Università degli studi di Firenze, Pisa e Siena), ha supervisionato tesi di dottorato in co-tutela internazionale e svolto il ruolo di revisore esterno per tesi di dottorato presso istituti stranieri. E' stato Presidente del Consiglio unico di CdL in Ingegneria Informatica dal 2014 al 2022. Attualmente è delegato per l'Assicurazione di Qualità della Scuola di Ingegneria.
E' membro del Centro per la Comunicazione ed Integrazione dei Media, MICC (centro di eccellenza del Ministero dell’Educazione, Università e Ricerca) e delegato della Rettrice dell’Università di Firenze per il Comitato di Indirizzo del Centro regionale per la ricerca, la formazione e il trasferimento tecnologico su Big Data & Artificial Intelligence (CBDAI). E’ stato responsabile scientifico di diversi progetti di ricerca e trasferimento tecnologico finanziati su bandi europei e nazionali. Tra i più recenti il progetto Social Museum and Smart Tourism (SMST, concluso a dicembre 2023 e finanziato sulla linea dei Cluster Tecnologici Nazionali Decreto Direttoriale 257/Ric del 30 maggio 2012) e Improving the customer experience in stores by intelligent computer vision (Principal Investigator, PRIN I-MALL concluso ad agosto 2023 finanziato sulla linea dei progetti di Rilevante Interesse Nazionale).

L’attività di ricerca di Pietro Pala si concentra su tematiche di pattern recognition ed apprendimento automatico per l’analisi di contenuto di immagini, video, oggetti 3D, con particolare riguardo a modelli tridimensionali del volto per il riconoscimento biometrico e di emozioni, modelli basati su deep neural networks per la guida autonoma, modelli di visione artificiale con reti spiking e camere neuromorfiche. Queste attività di ricerca sono documentate da più di 180 pubblicazioni sulle più rilevanti riviste internazionali e conferenze nel settore. Pietro Pala è Senior Member della IEEE e svolge attività di servizio scientifico come Associate Editor per la rivista Multimedia Systems della Springer e per le Transactions on Multimedia Computing, Communications, and Applications della ACM.

Pietro PALA

Curriculum

Pietro Pala si è laureato in Ingegneria Elettronica all’Università degli Studi di Firenze nel 1994 ed ha conseguito nel 1997 presso la stessa università il titolo di Dottore di Ricerca (PhD) in Ingegneria Informatica e delle Telecomunicazioni. Dal 2018 é professore ordinario presso il Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione dell’Università degli Studi di Firenze.

Svolge attività di docenza presso l’Università degli Studi di Firenze dove è attualmente docente di Basi di Dati per il corso di laurea in Ingegneria Informatica, docente di Analisi di Immagini e Video per il corso di laurea Magistrale in Ingegneria Informatica e co-docente (con Stefano Berretti) di Geometric Learning per il corso di laurea magistrale in Intelligenza Artificiale. Dal 2014 al 2022 è stato presidente del Consiglio Unico di Corso di Laurea in Ingegneria Informatica ed Intelligenza Artificiale.

Pietro Pala è membro del comitato scientifico del Centro per la Comunicazione ed Integrazione dei Media, MICC (centro di eccellenza del Ministero dell’Educazione, Università e Ricerca) e membro del Comitato Scientifico del programma di dottorato in Smart Computing promosso congiuntamente dalle Università di Firenze, Pisa e Siena. E’ coordinatore nazionale Principal Investigator del progetto PRIN 2017 I-MALL - improving the customer experience in stores by intelligent computer vision” (20172BH297), Progetto di Rilevante Interesse Nazionale.

L’attività di ricerca di Pietro Pala si concentra su tematiche di pattern recognition ed apprendimento automatico per l’analisi di contenuto di immagini, video, oggetti 3D, con particolare riguardo a modelli tridimensionali del volto per il riconoscimento biometrico e di emozioni ed a modelli basati su deep neural networks per la guida autonoma. Queste attività di ricerca sono documentate da più di 140 pubblicazioni sulle più rilevanti riviste internazionali e conferenze nel settore. Pietro Pala è Associate Editor per la rivista Multimedia Systems della Springer e per le Transactions on Multimedia Computing, Communications, and Applications della ACM.

Pietro PALA

Biography

Pietro Pala graduated with honors in 1994 in Electronic Engineering from the University of Florence, where he received his Ph.D. in Information Engineering and Telecommunications in 1998. Since 2018, he has been a full professor at the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Florence. He teaches Databases for the Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering, Image and Video Analysis for the Master's Degree in Computer Engineering, Geometric Learning for the Master's Degree in Artificial Intelligence, and Information Processing Systems for the Bachelor's Degree in Medical Radiology Techniques for Imaging and Radiotherapy.

He is a member of the Faculty Board of the Ph.D. Program in Smart Computing (jointly promoted by the Universities of Florence, Pisa, and Siena), has supervised Ph.D. theses in international co-tutorship, and has served as an external reviewer for Ph.D. theses at foreign institutions. He was President of the Unified Council of the Degrees in Computer Engineering from 2014 to 2022. He is currently the delegate for Quality Assurance of the School of Engineering.

Pietro Pala is a member of the Media Integration and Communication Center, MICC (center of excellence of the Ministry of Education, University and Research), and the Rector's delegate of the University of Florence to the Steering Committee of the Regional Center for Research, Training, and Technology Transfer on Big Data & Artificial Intelligence (CBDAI). He has been the scientific director of several research and technology transfer projects funded by European and national calls. Among the most recent are the Social Museum and Smart Tourism project (SMST, completed in December 2023 and funded under the National Technological Clusters line, Ministerial Decree 257/Ric of May 30, 2012) and Improving the customer experience in stores by intelligent computer vision (Principal Investigator, PRIN I-MALL, completed in August 2023, funded under the projects of Relevant National Interest line).

Pietro Pala's research focuses on pattern recognition and machine learning for content analysis of images, videos, and 3D objects, with particular attention to three-dimensional face models for biometric and emotion recognition, deep neural network-based models for autonomous driving, and computer vision models with spiking networks and neuromorphic cameras. These research activities are documented by more than 180 publications in the most relevant international journals and conferences in the field. Pietro Pala is a Senior Member of the IEEE and performs scientific service as Associate Editor for the Springer journal Multimedia Systems and for the ACM Transactions on Multimedia Computing, Communications, and Applications.
