Biografia

Laureata (Specialistica) in Matematica per le Applicazioni nel 2006 presso l’Università degli Studi di Firenze (UNIFI), ha conseguito nel 2010 il titolo di Dottore di Ricerca in Matematica presso UNIFI.
E stata ricercatrice a tempo determinato presso l’Università di Namur in Belgio (2010-2012) e presso ISTI-CNR a Pisa (2012-2013), ed è stata Assegnista di Ricerca presso l’Università di Bologna (UNIBO) (2013-2016) e presso UNIFI (2016-2019).
All’Università di Bologna ha coperto il ruolo di Ricercatrice a tempo determinato tipo b) (2019-2022) e di Professoressa Associata (2022-2024) nel settore MAT/08 Analisi Numerica presso il Dipartimento di Matematica.
E' attualmente Professoressa Associata nel settore MATH-05/A Analisi Numerica presso il DIEF-UNIFI e è membro del gruppo di ricerca NODA del DIEF-UNIFI.

Curriculum

Dal 2019 svolge attività didattica nell’ambito del settore MAT/08(MATH05/A) nelle scuole di Scienze e di Ingegneria di UNIBO e di UNIFI. E stata membro del collegio di Dottorato in Matematica UNIBO (2020-2022) e attualmente è membro collegio di Dottorato in Ingegneria Industriale UNIFI.
La sua attività di ricerca riguarda principalmente lo sviluppo di metodi numerici per problemi di ottimizzazione con o senza vincoli sulle variabili ed al loro utilizzo in contesti applicativi. Le principali applicazioni considerate danno luogo a problemi di grandi dimensioni e riguardano problemi di ottimizzazione che nascono nell’ambito della progettazione strutturale e della simulazione di impianti industriali, problemi di minimo nel senso dei minimi quadrati, problemi di apprendimento automatico.
Membro dell'Editorial Board delle riviste SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications (SIMAX) (dal 2023) e Computational and Applied Mathematics, Springer (dal 2021).
E' stata coordinatrice di due progetti INdAM-GNCS (2020, 2024) e ha ricevuto un finanziamento per due progetti Giovani Ricercatori INdAM-GNCS (2013, 2015). E stata responsabile dell’attività di ricerca e ricercatrice principale del progetto nazionale belga “LARGe-scale Optimization problems (LARGO)” finanziato dalla Regione Vallonia (Belgio) e da Samtech (Liegi, Belgio).
E' responsabile (PI nazionale) del progetto PRIN 2022 “MOLE: Manifold constrained Optimization and LEarning” (dal 4/2/2025).

Metodi numerici per problemi di ottimizzazione non lineare e problemi di algebra lineare di grandi dimensioni;
Ottimizzazione vincolata su varietà con applicazioni nell'apprendimento automatico.
Algoritmi senza derivate e ottimizzazione black-box per variabili continue e intere miste;
Applicazioni: problemi di ottimizzazione derivanti dalla progettazione aeronautica, analisi modale di strutture elastiche derivanti dallo studio del comportamento di edifici in muratura, meccanica del contatto; problemi di completamento di matrici;
Sviluppo software MATLAB e Fortran.

Margherita PORCELLI

Biography

Graduated (Master) in Mathematics for Applications in 2006 at the University of Florence (UNIFI), she obtained the title of Doctor of Research in Mathematics at UNIFI in 2010.
She was a fixed-term researcher at the University of Namur in Belgium (2010-2012) and at ISTI-CNR in Pisa (2012-2013), and was a Research Fellow at the University of Bologna (UNIBO) (2013-2016) and at UNIFI (2016-2019).
At the University of Bologna she covered the role of fixed-term Researcher type b) (2019-2022) and Associate Professor (2022-2024) in the sector MAT/08 Numerical Analysis at the Department of Mathematics.
She is currently Associate Professor in the MATH-05/A Numerical Analysis sector at DIEF-UNIFI and is a member of the NODA research group of DIEF-UNIFI.

Margherita PORCELLI

Curriculum

Since 2019 she has been teaching in the MAT/08(MATH05/A) sector in the Schools of Science and Engineering of UNIBO and UNIFI. She was a member of the PhD board in Mathematics UNIBO (2020-2022) and is currently a member of the PhD board in Industrial Engineering UNIFI.
Her research activity mainly concerns the development of numerical methods for optimization problems with or without constraints on the variables and their use in application contexts. The main applications considered give rise to large-scale problems and concern optimization problems that arise in the context of structural design and simulation of industrial plants, minimum problems in the sense of least squares, machine learning problems.
Member of the Editorial Board of the journals SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications (SIMAX) (since 2023) and Computational and Applied Mathematics, Springer (since 2021).
She has been the coordinator of two INdAM-GNCS projects (2020, 2024) and has received funding for two INdAM-GNCS Young Researchers projects (2013, 2015). She has been the research leader and principal investigator of the Belgian national project “LARGe-scale Optimization problems (LARGO)” funded by the Walloon Region (Belgium) and Samtech (Liège, Belgium).
She is the project leader (national PI) of the PRIN 2022 project “MOLE: Manifold constrained Optimization and LEarning” (since 4/2/2025).

Research interests

Numerical methods for constrained linear and nonlinear optimization and for large-scale linear algebra problems;
Manifold constrained optimization with application to machine learning.
Derivative-free algorithms and black-box optimization for continuous and mixed-integer variables;
Applications: optimization problems arising in the aeronautical design, modal analysis of elastic structures arising in the study of the behavior of masonry buildings, contact mechanics; matrix completion problems;
MATLAB and Fortran software development.
